Want and need are two different things.

America > New Zealand

And this minor incident doesn't take away or add anything.

Except it's one of about a bazillion other incidents along the same vein.

Americans are just too $&*# paranoid these days.

Of course, you're right -- 3,000 Americans didn't die on 9/11. Paranoia is unwarranted when there are no threats. If you think there are no threats, then you are an idiot -- plain and simple.

While the police were out of line in this instance, photographing government buildings and mass transit these days is a touchy subject. While one photographer might be out for a nice shot, another might be conducting surveillance. Frankly, if you don't acknowledge that the second could be true, you have the memory and intelligence of a gnat.

The problem is where is your evidence that photography is used in terrorist operations? What are you assuming the terrorists are so childlike that they can't eyeball something and go and write notes later? If you can see it without breaking a law, it should not be illegal to photograph it.

Bush's Patriot act? Why not place the blame on some of these people?

The terrorists are essentially winning. They've made us fearful.

Don't be a moron. Those that take action against people taking these photos are acting as Americans, not Bush drones under the guise of the Patriot Act. Americans will continue to find such actions dubious for as long as the events of 9/11 remain fresh in our memories.

It's unfortunate, but that's the way it is.

umm, no.

they must arrest you if they want to hold you for any serious length of time. They can only hold you without arrest until they verify your identity. There are legal limits on how long that takes too.

I'm pretty sure they can detain you for 24 hours without charging anything and it has always been like that.

could be wrong though.
