During spring break I saw tons of tourists taking photos around Chinatown and the downtown area. No problems whatsoever, but then again they were mostly Caucasian and were in groups so it was less suspicious.

he should have just got up and left after a few minutes. They can't hold him unless they charge him, assuming he has proper ID and what not.

Utter BS. Unfortunately, there's only going to be more of it.

I was once asked to leave/escorted out by some rent-a-cop from the Mountain View lightrail station for taking some night shots with the tripod. The next day I called the VTA security and raised hell with them. Had the chief of security call me back, apologize for the staff being out of line and got a verbal permission to take pics as long as I don't obstruct the flow of passengers.

LOL @ America.

I want to live in New Zealand :)

Want and need are two different things.

America > New Zealand

And this minor incident doesn't take away or add anything.

Except it's one of about a bazillion other incidents along the same vein.

Americans are just too $&*# paranoid these days.

I guess this picture could be considered an act of terrorism then. :disgust:

The cop didn't care, notice the sign "camera use prohibited". Nobody did honk though, that's forbidden too and you will be fined for that. Things about NYC I certainly do NOT miss. :)

Of course, you're right -- 3,000 Americans didn't die on 9/11. Paranoia is unwarranted when there are no threats. If you think there are no threats, then you are an idiot -- plain and simple.

While the police were out of line in this instance, photographing government buildings and mass transit these days is a touchy subject. While one photographer might be out for a nice shot, another might be conducting surveillance. Frankly, if you don't acknowledge that the second could be true, you have the memory and intelligence of a gnat.

There really is VERY little terrorism in the US. Ya, 3000 americans on 9/11.. but still.. the odds of anyone being affected by terrorism other than giving up his or her rights is almost ZERO.

Before 9/11 terrorism wasn't on my mind; after 9/11 it's still not on my mind.
