Man, have I fallen behind on mobo technology

We finally have money to buy new computers here at my work. I'm looking around and I don't know anything about this PCIexpress (16x, 1x, 3x, etc...) and we have nothing with SATA yet either. Can ayone point me to some good resources on this stuff?
