The "needed money" is for cell phones (and the insane bills that ensue), having the "latest" shoes, makeup, the "latest" hit CD (which are $25 to $30 US). All this in an effort to keep up with the other girls in school.
I get a kick out of how the media leaves out those tidbits of info that can change a situations paradigm.
Go into any phone booth in Tokyo, and you can get a number for a meeting place. You call the place and tell them what kind of girl you are looking for. They take your number and a girl (high school 90% of the time, though they won`t admit it) calls you back. You talk for a while and if the girl decides she likes what she hears, you meet. Then its off to the love hotel.
There is a campaign by the govt here to go after the guys hiring underage girls (under 18 and usually the guys don`t know that). This is going to be an uphill battle though, since the men here are used to the old law (just changed less than ten years ago) that any girl over 14 was legal.
Just like in the States, it seems girls are growing up faster than seems possible.
