Talking an ex and she makes a comment, I replay sarcastically, "aww thanks <3" in facebook chat...

and facebook makes the <3 into a huge pink fucking heart. Which entirely changes the meaning of what I said and results in awkward silence followed by her logging off.

Damn you facebook....damn you...
 
What exactly does "<3" mean, if not "a heart" ? 😕

Or were you indicating that your thanks, when ranked on a numerical scale, was less than a score of 3?

Well, it's a heart, so it made it into one. What did you expect? Surely you'd noticed Facebook turns other things into emoticons? Don't blame Facebook for this, you typed it in. *DO* blame Facebook for its sucky chat program though....damn thing's always disconnecting and having errors.
