He didn't just eat salads all the time either. He was able to enjoy Big Macs, etc.

It turns out that moderation, monitoring caloric intake and some light exercise are the keys to losing weight. Who knew?

highlights:

Cisna limited himself to 2,000 calories a day and tried to stay as close to recommended levels of nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins and fat. So while he may eat a Big Mac for dinner, he’d have to pass on the McGriddle’s for some yogurt or oatmeal.

Well, it worked out, Cisna told KCCI News he had lost 37 pounds, his cholesterol dropped from 249 to 170 and his low-density lipoprotein dropped from 173 to 113. He also managed to get all the meals for free from his local McDonalds.
 
Fucking dieting.

So easy to manage calorie intake if you're just preparing meals for yourself... gets really, really hard when you're trying to be social, meeting people at bars, going skiing with your friends, going to your folks' house for dinner etc.

Not impossible, just really, really hard.

I call shens. The only way to lose weight is to starve yourself, do the latest workout craze and use fat burning pills all at the same time. :colbert:
 
It's all relative. The omission of his starting weight is conspicuous. If he lost 37 lbs by only restricting himself to a 2000 calorie a day diet then he was probably starting from a pretty high weight (although that doesn't say anything about BMI) and is probably still a pretty high weight.

I'm trying to start dieting now, but if I only restricted to 2000 calories + 45 minutes of walking I'd lose weight very, very slowly, if at all. For the kind of dieting that's effective for me I need to restrict myself mainly to foods that have much lower calorie to gram ratios (are much more filling). Actually I'd go for this regardless of what the calorie goal was, if you're hungry constantly your metabolism will drop..

Yeah I agree. HE also probably did zero exercise prior to this publicity stunt.
 
I'm sure he did lose the weight. Mcds posts the calorie information and you can guage your caloric intake.

The problem is the actual quality of Mcds food. We all know the quality of meat as well as other ingredients. Its just not "real" food. That has to be doing some kind of damage to your systems over the long term.

Well yeah. I've held highly calorie restricted diets (with rigorous calorie counting) and kept McDonalds and other fast food places in my rotations. But I ate primarily lighter salads and some stuff like wraps. I was strict about keeping to a very conservative calorie/gram ratio in everything I ate unless it was a very small portioned filler food that was overall not a lot of calories and used to pad out the budget.

The big problem I'd have with what he's doing is the amount of sodium he's getting everyday. For me, I was so calorie restricted that the overall sodium levels weren't that high even though I was eating some foods that had a lot of sodium/gram. But I don't think your sodium needs and limits go up with your weight or metabolism. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this.

There seems to be a consensus that high sodium intake is a major contributing cause to the hypertension in the first place. Doesn't seem like good advise to avoid a habit only after it's given you a noticeable health problem, that's kind of like saying it's okay to smoke so long as you don't have lung cancer. I don't think that's what they were really saying though, more like if you have those problems you should limit your intake to even less.

That said, I've hardly ever been good at watching my salt and I think most people aren't :/

How is it not real food? What is real food? You just know in your heart that it's not "real" food because it's popular to bash McDonald's?
 
Just like the Supersize Me, this really has fucking nothing to do with McDonalds and is just basic health and nutrition.

Granted it seems like people still have very little grasp of this (we're getting extremes where there's people that ridiculously manage their health/diets and then others who pay either no attention or seemingly go out of their way to sabotage it), but we really don't need more idiotic sensationalism.

He also managed to get all the meals for free from his local McDonalds.

I'm sure there's nothing fishy here. McDonald's really needs to hire some new people to handle their PR and HR, between this and their "guides" for their workers on how to live poorly, they're quickly becoming a total farce again. They'd actually done quite a bit to get their reputation back to about neutral, but it seems they're intent on becoming a total f'ing joke again.

I think the problem with salt is that people get pretty ridiculous amounts of it, then they pair that with dehydration (a lot of people do not consume enough water), and a lack of exercise that would help it get worked through the body. Of course a lot of people claim they don't drink water because it makes them bloated and put on weight, which happens short term because their body retains it to balance the sodium levels, so they stop drinking water.
 
Yeah, good timing since I saw that stupid Egg McMuffin "whaaaat?" ad about a million times over the weekend. :\
