Underwater, Literally, With a $2 Million Bugatti

By RICHARD S. CHANG

Eddie Griffin might finally be off the hook for the most ridiculous crash in a priceless supercar. On Wednesday, a man drove a Bugatti Veyron into a lagoon in Texas after avoiding a low-flying pelican.

According to The Galveston County Daily News, the driver was checking out real estate in La Marque, Tex., when the pelican swooped into view:

The man jerked the wheel, dropped his cellphone and the car’s front tire left the frontage road and entered a muddy patch, which foiled his attempt to maneuver away from the lagoon.

The Veyron’s powerful engine gurgled like an outboard motor for about 15 minutes before it died.

The man was uninjured, physically, though after drowning the Veyron, which is priced at around $2 million, his ego might be a little damaged. (Lawrence Ulrich reviewed the new Veyron in The Times earlier this month.)

Now, Autoblog has unearthed video of the Veyron being towed out of the water:

Just reading about this car..

"To run safely at speeds above 233 m.p.h., drivers must insert a second, special key that lowers the body and closes the front diffuser flaps Batmobile-style. That key, I might add, stayed hidden in the pocket of John Hill, Bugatti’s American market manager, who rode shotgun with me."

Wow.

The Veyron’s powerful engine gurgled like an outboard motor for about 15 minutes before it died.

Letting it run after it entered the water is almost as stupid as driving into the lake.

I thought you are always supposed to just hit animals on the road if you are going fast and they are in your way...?

ROFL this is pretty funny; he has enough money for a $2 million car but can't afford a wireless headset.
