I've never snowboarded but I love skiing. Snowboarders piss me off when they sit 6 across in the middle of the slope so it's not a fraternity I'd ever want to join. I can't deny I've whacked a couple on my way by with my ski pole when they're in a particularly stupid place to stop (e.g. just beyond the crest of a hill).

this.

due to catching edges. broke my nose that way a long time ago and was knocked out.

They've mostly fixed that problem with the newer beginner boards. They flipped the camber of the board and dull the non-contact points. They are terrible for going fast or in the pipe but they are also very difficult to catch an edge on.

Interesting. I'd be willing to give it another try if thats the case. I'm a former surfer so the style of snowboarding was good for me...but so unforgiving to mistakes. Face planting in the water hurts a lot less than face planting in packed snow.

im going to squaw valley this weekend, im wondering if i should get a snowboard since its easier to take in my car. ive never snowboarded, i always though it was for the kiddies, but it does look fun going of ramps etc...

Go to Alpine Meadows, it's better.

I face planted once in whistler trying to bomb down a run. I tumbled a really far distance down the slope. My friend who was behind me said he saw a cloud of powder and me tumbling after. I busted my lip and it got infected. Fortunately my friend brought amoxicillin and it healed up. Snow must have some nasty bacteria in it.

I wear a full face helmet now...lol

Skiing, by FAR. Snowboarding bores the shit out of me. Learned to ski years before snowboarding became "a thing." So maybe it's just bias.

what is the purpose of skiiing / snowboarding?

I've been skiing since I was a little kid & snowboarding on and off too for about 15 years. Much better at skiing and I prefer it as well although I don't get to do either activity as often as I'd like.

Really I'm rather partial to all three poll choices! 😛

Skied for 30 years, tried snowboarding 8 years ago and never looked back, mind you all I do these days is cruise blue runs but damn is it fun. And powder, holy crap, boarding in powder is a million times better than skiing in powder.

freakin idiot snowboarders always scraping the whole trail to crust, don't be like them! go skiing! there's a reason some mountains don't even allow boarders

I prefer skiing. We had a term for snowboarders the last time I went skiing... what was it. It is right on the tip of my tongue... oh yeah, speedbumps. 😛

Most snowboarders are beyond useless, but the real speedbumps are the things they leave behind after sliding straight down the entire hill. Sheer ice followed by big irregular moguls, thanks snowboarders.

Healsliding is not snowboarding. Unfortunately most people don't seem to realize this and still call themselves snowboarders and brag about the black diamonds they went down. If you can't carve down it you shouldn't go down it. Of course Skiiers are also culprits as snow ruiners. They love to traverse across the mountain creating nasty ruts underneath all the good chutes and cliffs and completely ruin the landings.

Yeah, it's not like plenty of beginner/intermediate skiiers don't essentially slide their whole way down a run either, especially when they find themselves somewhere steeper and more challenging than they were expecting.

I went riding last night with my son, who skis. Funny watching all the /\'ers going straight down the slope.

You get that from both camps. Newbies are just learning the physics of the gear, so have some patience. I just picked up snowboarding this year and am about out of the beginner phase. But on my first day or two, you can bet I was just toe/heel sliding down, leafing, and doing garlands so I could get a feel for things. No different than a skier /\'ing straight down, which I see every day I'm out there.

I've gone skiing quite a bit over the years, and I don't recall ever seeing 'sliders' traversing anything other than the green circles. So if you're encountering snowboarders sliding straight down the entire hill (or skiers who are just /\'ing the whole way down), maybe you're on the wrong hill?

I've skied for most of my life and have been snowboarding for the last 17 years. Both are a lot of fun, but would pick snowboarding if I could only do one. As for your question, the first day or two of snowboarding is a very painful experience for most beginners. Not sure if you think this trip is the one you want to go through that process on. Skiing is much easier to pick up (but arguably harder to master).
