im going to squaw valley this weekend, im wondering if i should get a snowboard since its easier to take in my car. ive never snowboarded, i always though it was for the kiddies, but it does look fun going of ramps etc...

I snowboard, it is really fun. But if it is your first time, you will fall many times and hurt yourself

snowboarding but i've never tried skiing. looks like it could be fun too. no matter what you do i recommend getting lessons. don't listen to your friends that say they can teach you.

Snowboarding, because it's much less painful when you fall and I'm getting too old for that shit.

Fixed. Plus, skiing makes my left knee swell up and I'm in the lodge within an hour, barely able to walk. I can snowboard all day.

Although the first day or two of snowboarding will likely hurt like hell and you won't cover much ground. It makes sense to learn somewhere small and cheap, rather than Squaw. Donner Ski Ranch, Diamond Peak, some place like that.

Snowboarding! All my youth I was skiing and enjoyed it. 4 years ago I tried snowboarding and don't look back.

We're going to Jay Peak on january 17-18, second year in a row. Awesome mountain!

Well, that may work for you, but in my experience having your skis come OFF when you fall really makes a difference in your injury level. Snowboards inevitably will catch an edge on the way down and SLAM you against the side of the mountain.

Skiing is harder on the knees, though.

I've been snowboarding since the '80s. I haven't caught an edge in years. I'll mess up a jump and that hurts, but otherwise my falls are pretty gentle.

But now that you mention it, you're right. A newb'll be catching edges for quite a while.

Snowboarding. However, the initial learning curve to reach proficiency is much steeper for snowboarding. Learning curve to reach proficiency is much more forgiving for skiing.

This. When you ride skiis your legs are not connected and thus you can get terrible knee and leg injuries. Especially if you land wrong when hitting bumps and shit your legs and knees twist in some very bad directions.

Although I have not had much experience with snowboarding so my point is only valid from one point of view.

If you snowboard and learn how to fall, it's not so bad. I feel more in-control on skis. That's why I like snowboarding better. I like the feeling of letting go as you slide down the mountain...but you really need to know what you're doing. The past many trips I've done, I've fallen maybe once each trip...typically when I hit a mogul or something I don't see due to night lighting or late afternoon. I've gotten pretty good, but I just carve.

A guy I work with is adventurous enough to do jumps. I'd break my spleen doing that stuff.

I like skiing better, so when I fall down I can rap my legs around a pine tree and rack myself real good to a stop before going to the ER...

I prefer skiing. We had a term for snowboarders the last time I went skiing... what was it. It is right on the tip of my tongue... oh yeah, speedbumps. 😛

I've done both pretty extensively. Was an instructor skiing, on a ski team. Was out probably 5 days a week at one point. I also had a snowboard and would use it maybe 1 day a week. I eventually got out of snowboarding. Felt constricted by having both feet in the board. And once I started hitting the half pipe in my ski's there was no reason to keep boarding. Yes I would get yelled at by the posers what could barely strap on their bindings in a snowboard for going down the half pipe in skis. But at one point was able to do all sorts of nifty tricks and get serious air in those things. I would try it today. Probably break my knees 🙁

Tried it a few times growing up and just don't care for it

It's cold, the lines are long, and it's expensive. Meh...

You won't be doing ramps your first time out. You'll be spending the day on your ass. Squaw is a great place to learn because they have a lot of powder.

I switched to snowboarding in my thirties and loved it. I went back to skiing in my forties (due to skiing at Deer Vallety a lot which does not allow knuckledraggers...). Hoping to go snowboarding in the spring when I go to Big Sky where they allow boards...
