Guess I am out of touch with internet fads, as I have never heard of "Planking" before this article came out.

A man who fell seven stories to his death in Australia on Sunday was believed to have been participating in a new craze called "planking," in which people lie face-down on objects with their heads down and their arms beside their bodies to resemble a plank while someone else takes their photograph.

Queensland police issued a statement Sunday in which they urged "'plankers' to re-think their actions" following the death of the unnamed man about 4:30 a.m. at an apartment in the Brisbane suburb of Kangaroo Point.

A Facebook page called Planking Australia has more than 55,000 fans who have been posting photos of planking in usual places including on top of a McDonald's sign, office desk, railway tracks, brick wall and a chair lift.

Any Darwin Aw.. err Plankers here? Might want to consider if those pics are worth it before you go too far.

I've done crazier shit than that in my youth, that I look back on and gives me a little shiver realizing how razor thin was the margin between success (i.e. looking really cool) and disaster, though it was rarely ever for some public audience. It was usually a small group of friends who were doing stupid things for excitement or fun, and occasionally by myself (e.g. trying to learn a new stunt on my motorcycle or whatever).

I read the article twice to make sure I understood planking. How does something that lame become a craze?

/quietly retreats to dungeon to create as many stupid fads as possible to rid the world of stupid people.

/rubs hands with glee...

If you're going to Plank, Max Planck!

Reminds of the people who do parkour. A year ago some teenager here died doing parkour, fell 6 floors to his death.

At least that's skill based. If you push the envelope, it sometimes pushes back. A stupid skill-less internet meme is just dumb.

I agree, totally retarded.. but I had to laugh at this from the link in the OP.
Australian man Nate Shaw, 20, was last week charged after police saw a photo of him planking over a police car.
😵
