It is a terrible thing to say but this topic seems to be en vogue these days. Added in the interest of completeness.

One man died in northwest Houston on Friday night when an argument escalated into gunfire.
Around 8:45 p.m. the Houston Police Department responded to a call about a heated argument between multiple people in an apartment at the Hunter's Chase complex near Hammerly and Teague.
"In the course of the argument, people pulled out guns and started shooting," said HPD Detective Christopher Elder. "It is unknown at this time how many people were shooting or who the main aggressor was."
One man, estimated in his 50s, was taken to Northwest Memorial Hospital where he died of his injuries.

Yup, bringing back the good ole days that the people at the time jumped to get out of when given the chance. Just need to bring back High Noon Meetings and that glorious past will be restored. Men were Men and the Slow were Dead. Just as God intended.

Yah, more guns in public sure make for a safe environment! These old idiots should be put in jail until they die.

Idiots + guns in public = bad outcomes

And most people, especially gun nuts getting open carry permits, are idiots.

and yet gun violence is still on a downtrend, despite the endless haymaking on events such as this.

And yet another family of survivors switching in support of common sense gun control... The hard way.
Slowly, but surely. Family by family.

seeing as these people were in an apartment, i'm not sure how that counts as "guns in public" or anything related to open carry.

if the idiots had knives instead of guns, maybe someone would have lived, maybe not.

edit: to add to that, in order to open carry in texas, you must have a concealed weapons permit. and guess what? nationally, CWP holders commit firearms offenses at a rate less than police officers.

Imagine how much lower it would be if idiots were not carrying their guns everywhere they went.

So more people carrying guns, and gun violence trends downwards. Your answer is to have less people carrying.

All we need to do is just level the playing field. Government issued pistols for everyone. Fined for not having it on your hip in full display at all times other than showering or sleeping :p

Actual research into the topic shows that gun ownership is associated with a greater risk of death.

https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2014/01/111286/access-guns-increases-risk-suicide-homicide

Additionally, research shows that loosening gun laws correlates with increased gun violence.

Now that we know the data actually points the other way, if you were willing to accept what you thought it said before you should be willing to accept what it says now, right?

Incidentally, arguments that escalate into the brandishment or use of a gun are often cited as 'defensive gun uses' by gun owners despite the fact that in many cases these actions are crimes in and of themselves.

I see where you're going with that, but I'd actually like to see that happen only for the reason that it would end once and for all the argument of whether more or less guns out in the streets makes things safer for everyone.

Of course, we won't let just any 'ol person have them, and we won't let any 'ol person have them in certain places, and we won't let any 'ol person have any 'ol firearm of their choosing, and we won't let just any 'ol person shoot their weapon any 'ol time they feel like it, and we won't let any 'ol person have any kind of ammunition they feel like loading into their weapons.

OR, we can just let every person that can actually aim and fire a firearm have them as the Second Amendment so decrees via not mentioning who can and cannot have them. To hell with having folks interpreting the language of the 2A to their liking or having any other language in the Constitution and BOR interfere with its grammatically correct meaning.

As another forum member mentioned (sorry can't recall his handle) let's just accept what is grammatically written in the 2A and allow any other consequence not covered by said language. Meaning, we shouldn't set conditions after the fact to mitigate, constrain or impair in any way shape or form what the grammatical meaning of the 2A is and let the chips fall where they may. ;)

You should check out Canada.

Where is that Onion article with the headline that reads something like "American's can't figure out why so many gun deaths occur in America and no where else in the world" or something...

Edit:http://www.theonion.com/article/no-way-to-prevent-this-says-only-nation-where-this-36131 "‘No Way To Prevent This,’ Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens" Ok so I wasn't close. lol.

Based on the location, chances are the argument that led up to the shooting was most likely over drugs. I would bet that the gun used was not legally purchased.

but but but, universal background checks would stop this!!!!

It's good to know that people weren't getting shot before they relaxed the law.
