A British man died after poisoning himself with two spoonfuls of caffeine powder bought over the internet, local media reported Friday.
Michael Lee Bedford, 23, from Mansfield, central England, was at a party in April when he swallowed caffeine powder that a friend bought online for £3.29 ($5.26), Nottingham Coroner’s Court heard Thursday.
He washed the powder down with an energy drink, and around 15 minutes later began sweating and vomiting blood. He later died at King’s Mill Hospital in Nottinghamshire, central England, the Nottingham Post reported.
The court heard that Bedford ignored the product's recommendation to take no more than one sixteenth of a teaspoon and instead took two spoonfuls of the powder -- ingesting a level of caffeine 70 times more than is usually found in a high-energy drink.
Speaking outside the court, Bedford’s aunt Sue Burton said, "I think there should be a warning on it saying it can kill."
Nottingham Coroner Dr. Nigel Chapman said, "Caffeine is so freely available on the internet for £3.29, but it's so lethal if taken in the wrong dose, and here we see the consequence. So many people are upset and distraught by the death of Michael."

Good god...I wonder what that translates to in milligrams?

My caffeine tolerance has gone down considerably, as I don't consume nearly as much of it as I once did. (24oz Mountain Dew daily, while employed stocking shelves.) Now, 50mg is about the limit for what I will take at once. Much more than that, and you could take my pulse with a seismometer mounted on the other side of town. It's a really unpleasant state to be in.

Something like caffeine might be best in pill form, to carefully mete out the proper dosage. If you really want it powdered, buy a mortar and pestle.

Oh well, chalk up another one for Darwin, possibly.

Caffeine doesn't really affect me in normal quantities. I can drink a pot of coffee before bed, and sleep like a baby. I knew a guy who got temporary tunnel vision from eating too many NoDoz tabs. It went away after a few hours, and he was completely better in 24.

I almost OD'd on caffeine when I was younger. I now have an irregular heart beat and heart palpitations because of it.

Way back when I was in high school (25 years ago) I passed out in a class due to a mild caffeine OD. I had taken 6 Vivarin pills over the course of the day. The school administration freaked out when they found a couple of empty boxes of the stuff still in my backpack, thinking I had had quite a bit more than I actually did.

I think it's stupid that they want to blame the people who package it for not putting a warning label that it can kill you. EVERYTHING WILL KILL YOU. Babies like to put things in their mouth, but that is supposed to be something you grow out of. Stop being stupid and shoving mass quantities of stuff in your mouth!

caffeine is one of the safest drugs because it goes from awesome to horrible in a few doses. you won't feel like taking any more long before you get anywhere near lethal limits. its certainly not one of those more is better drugs, its got a sharp dive off a cliff near the start, so only a dumbass would overdose on it. anyways, he wins the darwin award.

I for one can't believe that the Brits allow a product that can hurt humans to actually be sold.

selling it in that manner is pretty damn irresponsible, though. Pure caffeine is a deadly, deadly poison.

Only if it can be verified that he didn't spawn any offspring before going on his magical journey.

And I guess "it goes from awesome to horrible in a few doses" if your "dose" size is less than one teaspoon-full. :)
But yeah, if you're consuming it in normal quantities, such as at a rate consistent with drinking coffee, hopefully you'll slow the hell down before downing a lethal dose - by which time your bladder would likely explode.
