I can agree with that, the country as a whole values human life, however, as individuals, Americans tend to be more selfish (in my own experience living in the USA, and traveling around Mexico and other Latin American countries) so I'd say there'd be less heroics like in the quoted article, because people in America don't give a shit about their neighbor, much less about a total stranger.
**Disclaimer: Before you start flaming me, I'm as capitalist as they get, though I wish I could care so much about the people in my community as I've seen in Mexican and Guatemalan small towns.
