Sad story. Let's hope that boy does the man proud with the way he lives the rest of his life.

It is a shame but it does make me proud of the people that live in our country.

I don't think Americans are any more heroic than people from other countries, they may even be less heroic because of capitalism.

By that, you mean fear of being sued for their heroic attempts.

So you think throwing a piggy bank in the pit would be a more cost effective solution than jumping in yourself?

Here in America, we value human life more than most countries. Look at the whole waterboarding fiasco. Would other countries spend so much time on something so trivial? No, they would not.

Because of capitalism?? What does that have to do with anything? Capitalism doesn't mean not giving a shit. If anything, that's the definition of the corrupt, police, peasant state you're living in, retard. GG though

I can agree with that, the country as a whole values human life, however, as individuals, Americans tend to be more selfish (in my own experience living in the USA, and traveling around Mexico and other Latin American countries) so I'd say there'd be less heroics like in the quoted article, because people in America don't give a shit about their neighbor, much less about a total stranger.

**Disclaimer: Before you start flaming me, I'm as capitalist as they get, though I wish I could care so much about the people in my community as I've seen in Mexican and Guatemalan small towns.

You are absolutely correct. Individually Americans are some of the most selfish people in the whole world. However, when we see such minor atrocities such as waterboarding or the occasional tasing, we go apeshit. It's quite pathetic, when you think about it.

I would be scared to rescue somebody cus you hear about all those people getting sued while trying to be the good samaritan like that person who pulled out a lady out of a burning car and she broke her neck and sued the good samaritan that pulled her out.

It only makes successful people selfish and greedy. The less successful people in the US would rather have some socialism / capitalism hybrid.

The problem is we go apeshit, but we rarely do anything about it.

Is it capitalism? Or is it this? Maybe this?

Blame an abundance of ambulance chasing lawyers and people's fear of potentially being sued into oblivion and losing everything they own over doing a "good deed." Not capitalism.
