Man, coworker was to trade in his car this weekend.

He was going to trade his car in this weekend. It had 100k of highway mileage on it and still looked great.

Wedneday it wouldn't start so he had to have it towed. Turns out timing belt + one bad valve.

He is looking at $1800 so far.

Probably the only thing worse would be to be the guy that may have bought it.

At least when you buy a used car you usually get some kind of short warranty. Whoever bought it would have been ok.

You do? AFAIK, used cars are pretty much always sold "as-is" unless you buy an extended warranty.

I don't know of many with timing chains that are not SOHC engines. Belts seem prevailent.

It was a PT Cruiser. The guy is an older gentleman. He thought the car was in good shape but knew it was getting up in miles. He wasn't planning on selling a basket case and prior to this he replaced the clutch out of principle whick looking back now cost him even more.

Those are some shitty parts. According to this site I found the minimum replacement mileage should have been 90,000 miles under severe usage. Definitely should have lasted past 100,000 miles before breaking.
