VENTURA, California (AP) -- A man who bulldozed more than 300 oak trees on his property could face more than 3 years in jail after he was convicted on criminal charges.

William Kaddis, 58, could also face fines of nearly $100,000. He also was convicted Friday of illegally keeping 62 dogs on his property in the town of Ojai, altering a stream without permission and filing a false police report.

The oak trees, protected under a 1992 Ventura County law, were destroyed sometime before October 2001.

"This was the largest rape of land in the history of Ventura County, and if they think we wouldn't prosecute anyone who destroyed our environment, they're wrong," Deputy District Attorney Karen Wold said.

Kaddis' attorney Roger Diamond said he plans to appeal the decision unless he can reach an agreement with the Probation Department.

Figures. His trees. If they wanted them, them shoulda' bought'em!

Its a land bylaw that you have to have a certain amount of trees in your lot according to the square footage of your house. This is the situation for the bastard that built a house behind me. We came back one night and all the trees that seperated us from seeing him were gone. It's illegal because you have to have a certain amount of trees per square foot. Because of this he was fined and had to vest a bond with the city until those trees were replanted and had his building permit put on hold.

Private property does not mean you can do absolutely whatever you want.

And besides, as conseratives love to say "if you don't like it, leave".

This is only a couple miles from my home and the area is a very beautiful oak forest. This guy seems like a real sleazeball too. He cut down all these oak trees so he could grow avocados, plus he changed the course of the stream. Plus, having 62 dogs on the property, with nobody living there to feed or take care of them, is animal abuse in my opinion. And then he played the race card and said the only reason he was being prosecuted is because he's Egyptian.

Once he's dead, the trees will still be gone and they will never come back (For a long time).

That just takes away from what future generations will have as a world.

Where do you draw the line than? 300 there, 300 here... soon there will be permanent damage on a larger scale.

And yet, after he dies it will still be private property.

Man I'm glad I live in Ohio where we don't have to put up with those stupid laws. Sheesh, required number of trees on a plot of land? Gimme a break! If I own the land, and I don't want the trees on it, then that's my business. Don't like the way my yard looks? Put up a privacy fence.

If everyone cut down trees on their private land, there wouldn't be much too look at in terms of nature apart from scarcely placed parks in 60-70 years.

The law was in place when the guy bought the property. If he wanted to grow avocados then he should have bought land that didn't have protected trees on it. Also, when you alter a stream you change everyone else's property who lives downstream from you.

Say that again...I couldn't hear you over the sounds of the Diesel Manure Pump proving grounds I'm building on the property I just bought next to yours.

OK you didn't read the WHOLE peice. This is in CA, what have they been having problems with???? Soil eriosion. i.e. the soil has nothing to hold it so when it rains it slides and takes out houses, etc....

There are a lot of lawsuits because of this now.

This law was in affect BEFORE he bought the land, if he didn't like it he should have tried to get a permit to take the trees down, or moved on and got another peice of land.
