Man catches child in 30 foot fall...

What apparently happened was the kid was goofing around near the escalator at the bottom, and from the OUTSIDE (not ON the escalator) grabbed that moving black rubber rail. I guess being smallish and holding on (or maybe he was caught on it?) it picked him up off the ground rather quickly, at which point instead of letting go, he grabbed on with his other hand. It took him up to the top, where I would assume at the point the rail turns downwards the sudden change in direction/position caused the kid to lose his grip and fall.

It's raining kids!

he grabbed the handrail of the "up" escalator, which then pulled him up along with it, on the outside of the escalator railing, over the area where smoking guy was standing. when the boy reached the top, the handrail curved back down or hit a wall or something and his hands were knocked loose, so he fell and was caught.

Amazing that both of you were able to describe what happened much better than the news article.

The kid's parents should be arrested for reckless endangerment. Escalators don't move that fast--how do you not notice your kid is gone until the escalator reaches the top floor?

Oh give it a rest. Accidents do happen you know and kids do do stupid things.

I guess what I don't get is did the boy flip in mid air to where he was going down head first? Talk about an odd way to catch someone, one hand on each leg?

I believe the kid hit the wall a time or two on the way down, and was likely flailing about int he process as well. They said the kid was pretty banged up.

someone please draw a diagram of how the hell this happened... i still can't conceptualize it the way the article is describing it.

Wait. The kid was banged up by a guy who was caught with one hand on each of the kid's legs?

Where's the outrage?!

I am thinking it was an outside escalator and each escalator probably separated by a certain distance, once he got on the one going up, he was fucked as he could've easily fallen down that gap (which he did). It is how I understand it. I can see the confusion though because some INSIDE escalators at malls have no gaps in between and not possible to fall through 30 feet down. Hope I make sense,

My guess to how it happened.

I know this is horrible and I know it's a kid, but this is the very definition of Darwin Award.

I don't have kids, but I was a kid once... I know how quickly I can run off and or hurt myself... Give the parents a break.

I'm surprised the guy isn't being sued for not catching the kid right and letting his head hit the ground.

We've got to give some credit to all the corn and grass that fed the cow, allowing it to turn into delicious ground beef.

dont forget to give credit to the cows that shit the fertilizer to help grow the grass, that fed the cows, that were butchered by the butcher and made into beef, that was sold to the restaurant and put into the hamburgers, that the store sold to the girl who was there with her boyfriend that caught the boy.

That's quite impressive!

I give credit to the ones who built the escalator. Had it been going slower, or faster, the timing would be wrong, and the smoker would not of have caught the child.

This is really interesting guys. Except for his "thought she was all that" girlfriend, he did a tremendous job.
