Man Buys Computer From Best Buy, Opens Box To Find Wooden Blocks

I'm never again leaving the parking lot of a Best Buy without verifying the boxed contents of a purchase.

When I bought a computer there, they insisted that the Geek Squad plug it in and verify that it works and run through the Windows first run steps. I would imagine that is standard policy making this case fairly hard to believe.

I baught a NEW video card from them years ago. inside was a 28.8 MODEM. I didnt notice any tampering with the box at all.

that was the last time i baught anything other then a game or cd at best buy.

When I worked at Best Buy, we had a customer complain about finding bricks inside the carton of a Sony camcorder he paid for $950. Boy was he pissed off when he went to customer service. I can't recall what was done to resolve this. This was like Christmas 1996.

More likely some person bought the computer and returned a box full of wood. Why no one checked it before accepting the return and putting it back on the shelf, who knows???

Ugh places like Staples or what we have here in Quebec is called Bureau En Gros (which is the french translation of Staples to Quebeckers). The story is I bought a USR 56k dialup modem and when I opened it up the packaging was a mess. The anti-static bag wasn't sealed properly and looked like someone used it. Brought it back to them and they stated they just reseal tha package.

So in a matter of fact without reading the article I would believe the customer. I bet someone here would try to the good ol switcheroo on them and see if they check the box. I've returned stuff and well never seen them check it whether it be a reflashed cd burner where I talked ot the manufacturer quite a few times or the modem. They don't care htey just reseal the package and say its new.

I bought a printer there last month (demo) and they'd said that it had been checked out and tested thoroughly. It didn't work at all when I plugged it in, I took it back, and it turned out there was an inch-and-a-half plastic "Mega Blok" building toy jammed into the mechanism. It may be that the Geek Squad has some younger employees than I'd presumed.

yeap i remember reading about best buy (i think) getting busted for doing this. They would just re-wrap stuff and re-sale it as new.

about 2-3 years ago they started pulling the stuff out of the package and testing it to make sure it is the item and it does not work.

but i do believe the guy was screwed. well it is possible.

Sounds like someone returned a box and BB just put it back on the shelf. If the guy was a scammer no way would he go to jail for it, he'd just give up and leave once the cops were involved. In my years in retail, I've seen computers returned with the guts emptied and blocks put in the case for weight. So I don't doubt that BB returned a box not even looked at it and put it back on the shelf.

.... because the only way for that to happen is for someone to return it to best buy, them not giving two shats to check it, resealing it, and trying to pass it off as new? I would have to give them a :thumbsdown: for that one. I mean what are the chances of a modem coming off the line at a video card factory?

yeah, he should have to pay your $100 fee just to make sure that what he bought was what he got.

more like BB doesn't check returns out. much as i hate fry's nazi tactics, it's hard to return something without the pieces inside.

I wouldn't be surprised if his story was true and that it came from the manufacturer filled with wood. Employees pack those boxes and people do sh!tty things some times. Some guys is probably laughing his ass off over this, and a few dollars richer after he sold the unit on eBay.

yea that line is complete bs. and at least Fry's has the courtesy to put a sticker on something letting you know it was returned.
