Man BBQ joints suck here in CA compared to NC/SC

Yeah our American bbq is shit. Not to say there isn't a good bbq restaraunt or 2 but for the most part it's crap. Good luck finding good fried chicken too.

Louisiana Fried Chicken's amazing, they don't have a ton of locations but if you're anywhere near one it's fricking delicious.

I will say the Koreans do fried chicken pretty good. If you're in Santa Clara, check out 99 Chicken. Its almost always packed from say 5PM on, but its kinda worth it.

I like Asian fried chicken, save for a few things:

boneless. bad news: never know wtf it is that you're eating. and lack of bones = less flavor.

double fried--that sounds like a wonderful thing, but it can be hard as a fricking rock.

again--do not confuse those mustard-loving plebs in SC with our original NC pulled-pork.

:colbert:

Ribs are fine and all....but what's the point? I do prefer dry, but if you're going to drown them in some over-sweetened reddish sauce, why care about meat, then? Such dishes are for people that just want the sauce.
Maurice's or GFYS! :colbert:

1) Beverly Hills: Tag team Marcel Vigneron and Haru Kishi have a second round planned for their Coop pop-up held at Gonpachi. Round one served as an Easter egg brunch, this time they return with a barbecue brunch taking place on May 26 and 27 from 10:30AM to 2:30PM. Their menu is still tbd but the five-course meal costs $42 per person and resys can by made here. [EaterWire]

I'm in San Diego. My favorite places are:

#1 West Coast BBQ (in La Mesa)
#2 Famous Dave (in Oceanside
#3 Phil's BBQ (Seaworld area)

Sorry but Argentinians do not cook meat on a grill, they stake it over hot coals.

That is only if you have the space available to pull that off. most people in the city cook on charcoal grill.

the first thing road crew does when they get to a job site is to get the charcoal started

I lived in South Carolina for a few months and ate quite a lot of bbq at highly rated places. They all sucked. I'm convinced that Texas is the only place to get fantastic bbq.

As a Houston transplant that has spent the last 10 years in the Charlotte area, I'm quoting this for truth.

Best BBQ I've had so far in CA is Phil's in San Diego. Can't wait to eat it again!

Randomly dropped by this place over the weekend. 75 minute wait for food.

ribs were very tender, sauce a touch on the sweet side. I agree that this is not "bbq" in the american sense of the word, but it still tasted better than a lot of "real" bbq I've had.

glad I went but I'm not exactly in a hurry to go back. 3 baby back's + 1 beef rib was more than enough food.

My dad lives in southern IL just on the KY boarder. There are tons of amazing BBQ joints. we went for drive in KY and stopped at one little place the brisket sandwich i had was fucking amazing. $6 and it was big enough to feed a family.

At least from what I've gathered from the natives on my journey down in these southern parts, Texas is just a different type of barbeque or something like that? I've had BBQ down here, and it's fine, but I still drench it with hot sauce. Nothing like going to the Thai restaurant and putting whatever that red sauce is all over my rice. It clears the sinuses rather well! 😀

I always liked Everett and Jones when I lived in the Bay Area.

Even though I live in NC now I'm not a big fan of the NC style bbq. I do like pulled pork, but the vinegar and pepper they put on it is just nasty.

Now the Central Valley of California does have it's own style of BBQ. Tri-tip. Originated in Santa Maria, but is pretty popular all over the central valley and other parts of California. Damn I miss good tri-tip.

Went to Smoking Pig in San Jose, and I think I have a new favorite bbq joint. Had a rib and chicken combo, and the 3 ribs were bigger than a full plate at Armadillo Willys. Very tender, falling off the bone. I'll get to the chicken later on tonight, but so far its a winner!
