Yeah, not sure how they could have safely angled it. Into the ground obviously did not work and sending it into the air or to the sides would be worse.

I shot myself in the chest with a .45 once. Similar situation. An indoor shooting range I went to had a poorly designed backstop that was failing. In two of the lanes, ricocheted rounds would hit your legs once in a while. I fired my .45, an H&K USP .45C, and the round returned directly back to me and hit me square in the center of the chest. I couldn't believe it happened. Crazy. The vast majority of the energy from the round had dissipated so it didn't hurt much. It left a red mark that went away later that day. I should have kept that bullet, but didn't think about it until later.

This wasn't in Lockport, IL was it? Some guy had his legs hit and ultimately got hit in the chest about 6 weeks ago which closed the range for the day. That would have sucked if it hit your face.

No. It was a range in Woodbridge, VA; Shooter's Paradise. The owners closed the range shortly thereafter to upgrade the backstop. The new backstop is made up of thick mass of shredded, used tires.

Damn, that's one lucky sonofabitch!

Yeah, I imagine that it lost a significant amount of force from hitting the plate, but it still would have killed him if it was about 2 inches closer.

It also bounced off the ground before him. It would take his eye out for sure, but not much beyond that.

Just think how funny it would've been if he'd flopped down on the ground, holding his head, screaming, "I'm hit! I'm hit!!"......then his buddies come running up, "OMG! WTFBBQ!!" and he pops his eyes open, puts a big shit-eatin' grin on his face, and hollers, "PSYCHE!!!"

Wow! That guy should buy a lotto ticket.

Yeah, people told me that after I walked out of my old rental house without a scratch, right after it exploded from a natural gas leak (I was sleeping at the time, the blast went right around me). My answer? WTF makes you think I have ANY luck left to win the lotto with??? ;)

You angle it into the ground. He had it angled into the air, which is why it came back and hit him.

Right before the bullet strikes him, you see dirt kick up right in front of him -- what is that from?

Seems like the bullet would be coming in at too shallow of an angle from the metal plate to pop up towards head level in such a short distance after hitting the ground.

It looked like it hit the ground first then bounced up.

The bullet. It bounced because it was coming back at a shallow angle.

EDIT: There were no replies when I typed this and three people got in before me. Wow.

A bullet falls onto a target. I counted about 2.5 seconds from between the initial firing and when the ricochet returned. The bullet would have fallen 100 feet during that time.

Are you saying it fell from the sky, hit the ground and bounced up back at him? Not quite getting what you're saying because when I watch the clip, it seems like the bullet came off the ground before hitting him. You can clearly hear a thud and see a puff of sand on the ground right before it hit him.

He's saying it ricocheted into the air first, yes. This is easily possible; it ricocheted into the air, ricocheted into the ground in front of him, and then the bullet hits him. You can see the bullet hit the ground right in front of him, but the target is so far away that the bullet would have to ricochet into the air first in order for it to travel that far

Apparently the metal plate he was shooting at deflected the bullet upward slightly.
