I've used Norton AV and adaware to remove as much as i could, but it's still there. Also, IE/FF cannot connect to a number of webpages that it should be able to. Anyways, here's my HijackThis logfile. I really hope you guys can help. This is a PITA.

thanks guys for all your help. i think norton had fixed the problem as earlier stated and so far the computer seems good. if i continue to have trouble, ill certainly follow all your posts above. again, much appreciated
 
Even if you think Norton has it fixed, do as suggested. Disable System Restore and then run in Safe Mode then use Avast and Superantispyware to scan your system (full scan). I would also clear out all your Temp Files before running the scans. Better to be sure it is all clean before you say it's clean.
 
Once you get your system cleaned (and I don't know how you can ever be 100% sure without reformatting), consider putting an ongoing system backup in place. There's really no reason to have to go through all the pain of malware removal. Good image backup software is available that will let you restore your entire system to its previous, uncontaminated, state. Acronis, ShadowProtect, and Windows Home Server software are available for $100 or less. Vista Business and Ultimate also include imaging software.
 
man. this really sucks but you guys were right. it's still on here and i can't get rid of tidserv. the entries that im supposed to delete from the registry aren't there in the first place and norton keeps finding the virus (it wants to restart and remove then, but it never does). any ideas?

Wow. I just read Symantec's writeup of how the Backdoor.Tidserv rootkit works. Wow.

It hides all files and Registry entries that begin with "TDS", so you won't see them. And it runs in Safe Mode, too. HijackThis won't even see it.

Try creating a file named TDS.txt and see what happens to it when you save it.
 
That's a real bad trojan .. I would nuke the drive and reinstall ... so save the user data files for later restoral.
Or if the user had a Ghost image, that was not very old, but before the infection, you can restore from that.
 
If that malware really works like Symantec claims, it'd be best to use a CD-based operating system or attach the hard drive to another computer. At that point, the rootkit function that hides the malware wouldn't be active and the file and Registry items that need to be deleted would be visible.
 
wow. i had no clue that it was this bad. but, in all honesty, it seems to make sense. i can't believe this shit though. i went to www.wwtdd.com and the next thing i know, this crap is there. i guess ill have to format.

a quick question though - there's a single hdd that i've partitioned (one for the OS, the other for data). if i move all important files (documents) to the data drive, will formatting the OS partition take care of any and all problems? would the virus somehow migrate or something stupid like that to the data partition (i.e. would i be copying infected files to the data partition)? i obviously have no idea how this stuff works.
 
Data files are seldom infected or bothered. In the good old days, viruses deleted files or added weird messges. Now folks want to make money from infecting you.

Most AV programs can scan a data file and tell you if it's infected with anything. My recommendation, if you want a 100% sure fix, would be to copy any important data to another hard drive, re-format and re-partition the whole drive, re-install Windows and your applications, and then move the data back.

Folks, even experienced ones, sometimes make formatting mistakes and format the wrong drive. Or other things go wrong. Hence my suggestion to copy the data elsewhere. If your data is important to you, you SHOULD have some place to make backup copies anyway.
 
I have this same problem, at least the hijacked browser problem. I got rid of xpantivirus2009... but I can't seem to get the browser thing to go away permanently. I'm watching this thread... good luck =D

Malwarebytes removed the thing once for me this morning, but it's come back tonight.
 
Remove Restore dates when using MBAM, use CCleaner, Make a new restore date.
Then it might not return??? (It is regenerating from a hidden location?)

Also try F-Secure's Rescue CD, which is a bootable CD. The malware has nowhere to hide. This bootable CD will also fetch updates before it runs the scan, if the system has an Internet connection. Looks like a valuable tool :thumbsup:
