(Lezak 1983). Translated this means that women tend to have less-specialized brains, with talents distributed over larger areas. For example, men tend to have language concentrated in the left brain, and may lose all language ability with a damaged left brain, whereas women have language talents spread over both hemispheres."
but that paragraph does not equal to the title of the thread...which is this:
"Males only use one side of their brain whereas females use both?"
The above sentence makes you think that men are half as dumb...or are only analytical and not creative..or some other random sh!t. THe only thing it really means is that the brain use is spread out more in females then in males, so when brain damage occurs, men lose more of a single skill than females do.

Cerebus, and others,
The interpretation of this thread can be interpreted in various ways. "Males only use one side of the brain whereas females use both" can very easily be an oversimplification of "males tend to specialize and utilize a disproportionate amount of 'brainpower' from each hemisphere, as opposed to women, who tend to simultaneously utilize both sides during identical tasks." That's not to say that women are twice as smart, or that men CANNOT use both sides of the brain. But research definitely suggests that on average, men and women use their brain differently in these respects. Many of you are trying to oversimplify this concept or find implications from it that are very misleading. Don't assume that different processing means different intelligence or different levels of creativity, critical analysis, or any other skill.
What generalizations can we derive from this data? That men are generally more specialized, leading them to professions like scientists, doctors, or engineers. Women, on the other hand, often excel in occupations requiring multitasking and a wide array of knowledge or skill. Consider secretarial positions or raising multiple children. Many researchers suggest that this phenomenon can even be seen in prehistoric man, when women gathered food, cared for the young, and taught them, while the men had only one task: to hunt. On the other hand, these are only generalizations, and there are always exceptions to the rule.
divinemartyr,
You bring up a valid point. However, the caveat here is that we are not implying that men only use a certain fraction of their abilities--only that men tend to use more of one side while performing a certain task, while women more commonly use both. Current scientific research suggests that both men and women use very close to their potential with respect to brainpower--they simply use it in different ways.
