Makita BDF452HW for $164 + Free Battery - Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Makita-BDF452H...8165113&sr=1-1

Amazon has a deal right now for the best Lith Ion 18v drill on the market. It's the Makita BDF452 for $164 (normally $189), but if you click "Add both to cart" button under the the "Special Offers and Product Promotions" part half way down the page, you get an extra battery for free. It's normally $51 dollars for the battery. That gives you 3 batteries total.

This is a hot deal. I have had this drill now for almost 3 years, and though I don't use it as often as I used to, it still works great. It's as light as most 12V drills but much more powerful. Only concern is that the drill gets fairly hot with continuous use, but that hasn't caused any problems yet.

Also, don't do what I did and drain the batteries too low or the charger won't charge them again. Once it starts to slow down, charge it!

if only they had a deal that featured the 3/8" driver and the right angle driver.. >_<

for the price in the OP i got a 14.4v drill, impact driver, and light with two nimh batteries a couple of years ago. that's a much better deal, imo, li-ion batteries are great for marketing but don't really make the tool any better. they're also smaller, the nimh batteries are 2.6ah and those are 1.5. likewise, being 18v doesn't have any significant advantage and is just gonna run down the batts faster.

Lithium Ion has a couple of distinct advantages, but yes a few negatives as well. Lithium Ion charges in 15 minutes, vs. a couple of hours for nimh. Also, Lithium Ions do not drain when unused like a Nimh do. The batter weight is also signifigantly less than a nimh 18v battery. That's one of the reasons why the Makita weighs like a 12-14v drill and has great ergonomics.

In a recent test by Popular Woodworker it had the best performance and ergonomics. It won Editors Choice. Fine Woodworking also picked the Makita as the Best Overall AND Best Value.

The negatives are that the batteries may only last 3 years and you're not supposed to leave them on the charger because it could shorten battery life. They do have a shorter runtime than nimh, but with a 15 minute charge time and 3 batteries...I think I can live with that.

Also, Makita sells 3.0 batteries as well. I really don't see that as a non-issue since the Makita drilled more holes and the batter lasted longer than all over 18v drills in recent test.

That's funny. I run mine down until it about stops on a regular basis. Zero problems.

Do you have the same drill/batteries? I had always done that with other drills, but they weren't Lithium Ion (they were NiCd/NiMH). I did that with these and they wouldn't charge anymore. They actually still have a little charge in them, 2 years after the fact.

Si. We've got 3 of the Makita Li-Ion sets at work and they're all used the same way.

dang, missed the free battery deal 🙁 looks like it's back to $51

It's still working. You have to scroll about half way down the page to the part that says

"Special Offers and Product Promotions
Receive 1 Makita 18-Volt BL1815 Battery free for every 1 Makita 18-Volt Tools you purchase offered by Amazon.com. Here's how (restrictions apply)"

Button ---> ADD BOTH TO CART

There's another button on the page that says add both for $211, don't use that one. The correct one is directly below it.

It'll show the discount once you are at checkout and ready to purchase.

how do the tools eligible for this deal compare to makitas LXT line?

It compares quite admirably, especially since it is an LXT drill. (LXT is the battery technology)

Technical Details
Makita LXT lithium-ion battery and energy star rated 15-Minute rapid optimum charger produces 430-Percent total lifetime work with 2.5X more cycles

On the makita site (http://makita.com/en-us/Modules/Tools/Default.aspx?CatID=4), these tools do not have LXT in the tool name whereas the others do. Perhaps that is where my confusion lies.

Do these tools accept the 3.0A version of the battery (I see they come with 1.5A)?

Do the other LXT tools (the green ones that come with the 3.0A use the 1.5A)?

That is odd, but it most definitely is an LXT model. In fact, although that product page doesn't list it as an LXT model, it does have the LXT promotion listed underneath it, and is included in one of the LXT combo kits.

The 3.0A batteries work just fine, as that's what I replaced my original batteries with.

Got my drill today. I haven't had a chance to really use it, but the thing that surprised me the most is the weight! The thing is about 1/3 the weight of my DeWalt 18v (one XPS one older model)drills that I normally use. Looking forward to putting it to good use this weekend! I'm building a flip-top cart for my DeWalt 735 Planer.

I spent too much time looking at this stuff today... from what I can gather, the 'white' tools are the only ones that ship with the 1.5Ah batteries, and are marketed as more compact versions of the 'green' tools (1.5Ah batteries also marked as 'compact'). They will also accept the 3.0Ah. Though the green tools ship with the 3.0Ah, they should accept the 1.5Ah batteries also, though obviously won't run as long. Both sets use the same charger.

Actually, and I'll look again. A few months back I saw a kit that came with 1 1.5 and 1 3.0 ...

Hm, the LXT311H comes with green tools and 1.5Ah batteries. I'm betting the 1 of each battery didn't sell too well so they took it out of the lineup.

placed my order for this bad-boy this past monday,
and what do you know, show's up at my door yesterday! (2 days later!)
-i even selected the free- super savor shipping (UPS ground), and amazon shipped quick.

this drill is pretty sweet-
i had an old 10lb 12v black & decker that i had for past 6 years that finally
kicked the bucket,
this Makita blows it away.

probably overkill for my "around the house" stuff, but you never know-
