Making your own copper thermal grease? Possable?

I was wondering, would it be possable to make your own thermal grease ? Right now I am in the process of milling out a copper block and wanted to know if you could mix in the very fine copper dust into regular thermal grease and if that would help ? If not does anyone know how copper grease is made ?

Good question DanceCraft... I`ve often wondered if say "Never seize" would be a good thermal compound??? I know that some of the silver compounds are conductive... So what would be the difference??? Also there are Copper based anti seize compounds also and even Nickle based which are the best but they are intended for high heat apps to prevent gauling or metal adhesion... I would think that even though your idea as well as my "Never seize" idea are conductive they would transfer heat very well but you would just have to be careful on the application to a CPU...


Anyone else have any input or suggestions???
 
Humm Interesting idea of using Never seize. As for the conductivity of the grease: I'm not too worried, your using a metal heatsync right ? just avoid getting it on the smds on the amd chips. Anyone have any experence in using any of the greases described ? Last but not least, I'm not quite sure about using lead as a thermal conducter but, it is soft enough that if you put a extremely thin sheet of lead between your processor and your heatsync, would this be better than heat sync grease? How about using a small pice of tin foil ? Just some off the wall ideas.... 😀

The problem with using copper that was obtained from a machining process is that the bits would not be of the same size and having one lump holding the heatsink away from the chip is a possibility. Powered metals are usually manufactured by a melting and atomizing process similar to spraying paint. My suggestion would be to go to a painting supply or artist supply store to get powered paint pigment of the desired composition.
 
I remember an article a friend of mine told me about and read somewhere about Silver was the best thermal conducter... Well I went to the local coin shop and bought 2 silver dollars for about $10 + uncle Sam`s cut (tax) of course these were worn beyond any real value except for the silver in them... I`m going to use them to make spacer plates and a sort of heat magnet for my PAL35T`s on mine and my wife`s puters... Oh I remember now where I read about it (www.overclockers.com) was the place. Also maybe a powder composed of silver dust would make a killer thermal paste too like dkozloski had said... food for though, maybe we may be in the making of a new idea to overclocking??? Screw the fame take the money.... 😉
