Yeah it can be done but you definitely have to find a good source, possibly become a business so you can deal with real wholesalers, and then spend thousands on credit. It can be done on a smaller scale but I imagine that would be very difficult and would require finding the PERFECT item and source.

So, for someone like me, I wish I could do it, but can't, really.

EDIT: But for someone who does do this a lot and needs help, hire me! As I've posted before I need online work.

You don't have to start off with huge volume orders. Good sources are easy to come by...you just need to devote a little bit of time. Find 10 itmes you'd like to sell, figure out how you can get them cheaply. If you can't, move on. Eventually you'll find sellable items and the same concepts to source product apply.

Well, I was on the recieving end of this, and eBay seems to have no problem with it, so here goes -

List a bunch of High end pro audio gear (having actual gear not needed) at a low (but believable) price. Require "buy-it-now", and instant payment via paypal. Then make excuses for as long as you can as to why your not able to ship (friend has cancer, familiy emergencey, etc - the more sorry you make people feel the longer you can keep it going). Keep selling more "gear" and only refund money when things get nasty. If people feel sorry enough for you, you can get eBay fees reversed, since no actual transaction occurred (other than trhe free 6 week loan)

You'll have to register to read it. She has floated about 50k in funds by my estimation.

Can you say Fraud?
The ebay feedback would suffer as well.

eBay seems to think it's ok, since she returns everyones money eventually. When the house of cards crumbles, I'd hate to be at the bottom.......

Atleast I got my $1825 back.......

$1825??? OR $18.25??? Not trying to be a smart @55, but really want to know.

$1825 - how do you think she could float 50k on $18.25?

I buy a lot of big ticket items on eBay, as well as sell them - this was my first bad experience.

Who is this seller, BTW?

My dad goes to local auctions, and sell its on ebay then. He makes a good living. I think that he likes to sell books the most. He told me that older toner carts for copiers sell really well. Alot of company have agreements to get toner from the copier company every month, but they don't use it all. At the end of their contract they have a surplus of toner. My dad buys it (very cheap), and sells it on ebay.

As far as making money on ebay... it's hit and miss. To do it all the time and reliably, well it's more often miss then hit.

Unless you were one of the "pioneers" that started about 5 years back or more and putting out products that had no competition, then chances of you starting to make money as an individual from scratch is very very low.

If you are already a business and have a REAL store to make money through and use ebay as another outlet to sell what you can sell on there, then yes, ebay is very profitable as another avenue of revenue.

The problem with ebay is you need a hot item and you need to get it at a price no one else can get it at. Then get it in bulk and sell it in bulk with little competition. Chances of you doing this are very slim. Finding hot items isn't that hard. Most tend to be electronic related. However, finding them at a price where you can resell them for more and make a profit and hoping no one else can do that either is another story.

I have a few friends that started back in the day and have a "niche" for certain items. One friend does B to D rated horror movies. He's the biggest seller on ebay for this stuff and does "OK" with it. Not well enough and stable enough to not need another job. It's still a side income for him. He does say there are other people out there that try to compete with him for this niche market of stupid, but hard to find, movies. These are the kind of movies that no store carries because if they did, chances are that maybe only a handful of people per town would buy them. Those that do are fanatical about buying them. But the demand is so low overall in an area. So ebay allows my friend to reach out to all the handful of people in every town around the world and give him a decent enough market. But still, it's a niche market.

My other friend does custom design work on pc's, xboxs, playstations, and other stuff with his air brushing and modding. He STILL needs a full time job elsewhere but it's a hobby that makes him money now.

In both instances, both friends of mine started way back when and have built up good feedback over the years well before others tried to compete. Now, both have to deal with TONS of competitors and they still do alright mainly because they were the originals. The other sellers for their niche don't do nearly as well because they just don't have the volume of feedback. Still, more competitors try to come in all the time. Many fail and give up all the time too. My friends do alright but not enough to live completely off their ebay dealings.
