making computer reboot by itself...

I need to have a computer physically reboot every hour or so... I do not want to have it reboot through Windows because the system might be crashed (which is why I need it to physically reboot)...

So I basically need some kind of timer that will turn the computer off and on at interval, and repeat forever. Anyone know where I can get such a thing?

A side note, would resetting the computer without going through the OS process have a harmful effect?

APC has a UPS that you could setup like that. You just plug it into your switch/whatever, and plug the computer into the UPS. The UPS has an IP address and you can reboot manually or I'm sure you can set it up to reboot during certain intervals. However, it will not have a clean shutdown and it will probably scan disk everytime it comes back up

It is a workaround to keep some important but buggy programs operating , for which there is currently no alternative.

download a simple DOS program called shutdown.exe

get it from my ftp if you can't find it

ftp.errsolutions.com
login : anonymous

run a startup script with shutdown command ,,, or put it in task manager

something like this ?
shutdown \\computername /y /c /r /t:3600

It's possible, but I don't know why you need to reboot... fix the apps or nuke it.

err: Yes, but if the system is completely gone (won't even respond to CTRL-ALT-DEL), or at the blue screen , then it won't work.

I'd probably get a one-shot multivibrator with a resistor capacitor combination to give the time interval needed and hook up the output(or an analog fet) to the reset lines.

That or look at one of the light timer switches that turn your lights on and off at preset times to make it look as if you are home. See what the output is and tie it to the reset lines.

Let me know if you can't find a software solution.

Okay, thanks for all the input.

I've emailed APC and awaiting their reply to see if they have something that can reboot on intervals.

The timer is cool, but I can only find one that has two on/off cycles... This would only allow me to reboot once per day. For example.. Power OFF at 3:00 PM, Power ON at 3:01 PM.

Anyone know of any other timers or specialized equipment that can do this?

at work we have a unit which we have hooked up with our mail servers and a phone line. If the mail servers ever stop responding, all we do is call the number and after entering our password in, we can "reboot" the machine. If thats what you're looking for, PM and ill find out what it is for ya
