Making bootable USB drive?

what is the best way to make a regular usb drive into a bootable one? i've tried a few things but no luck so far.

What do you want it to boot with DOS, Linux, Windows ... We need more information.

I want to be able to boot into dos and possibly windows.

I've tried several of the methods on the bootdisk website but no luck. what have you guys used?

HP offers a free USB flash drive utility.

Use that to format and make bootable: to a DOS prompt.
Format as FAT or FAT32, because some systems won't boot from NTFS formatted USB flash drives.

novicopr wintoflash is free and I use it to make all my windows install flash disks. I have a keyring with ~10 flash drives on it too each with different windows / linux / mac distros
