i know its a long shot, but just thought i'd put this one out there.

wondering how they work the usb/firewire drives; they must have a controller in the external box?

No, the external drive controllers are either on the motherboard or on an add on PCI card in your desktop. In the laptop, they are on the mobo.

Not sure what you want to do. You borked your dektop - so why not just use the laptop?

It is possible to remove the laptop HDD and mount it in the desktop, but that won't buy you anything but a BSOD on boot.
