Making a Ti4200 behave like I think it should...

I see several folks here saying that their GF4 Ti4200's (mine is 128MB 8x) run the latest games (even some including Far Cry) well. Decently shall we say. So I have been wondering, what are you doing? For instance, I play Battlefield Vietnam. The game is excellent, but it frequently gets choppy. Is there a setting I am missing? Like is it trying to do DX9 stuff on my DX8 card? is there a way for me to turn this off, force the game to play well with my card and it's capabilities? Am I missing something in the video settings panel?

I will try to change up the settings a bit, but I am trying to shortcut the randomness of my testing and hopefully save myself several hours of work. Thank you to all who reply.

How's the rest of your system? Are you running anything in the background? Have you tweaked windows to be as lean as possible? There are a million other factors besides just the GPU and the game...

Yes, do, because windows is a bloated OS. You can trim a ton of fat off it if you spend an hour or so getting rid of the stuff that no one needs.

Magratton,

I have a similar system (2.4ghz p4) with a 4200. I upgraded from a 1ghz system with 768mb RAM to my current system that started with only 256mb RAM. Suddenly BF42 took FOREVER to load (5x longer, or more, than the old system took), and stuttered a lot. Found out it was a lack of RAM causing the problem.

In Battlefield, I noticed it's memory use peaking around 480mb. If you have 512mb RAM, you'll get some stutter since that's not enough for your OS and assorted programs, plus BF42.

I now have 768mb RAM, and that seemed to reach a sweet spot for BF. No stuttering problems (except when a server is overloaded with players). Try adding a stick of memory and see if that solves your problem.
