Making a new system

The idea just popped into my head, " HEY! i can make an Athlon xp 2500+ system for like $380 bucks!" Now my question is this, If I have a 5700u, and I get an AGP 8x board, how long will that last me? Will this impending PCI-E introduction make me regret this? My hope is for this to last me about 2 years, assuming I upgrade my graphics card to a high end AGP card along the way, could this happen? Or, do you think VIA will be making socket A mobos with PCI-E, and AGP options?

Skip on going with a 5700u, go with similarly priced 5900se/xt/nu, 9700pro, or 9800 (if you can find one). I wouldn't worry about the threat of impending PCI-E, AGP 8X will probably be supported for atleast two more years. PCI-E may end up being similar to how IDE and SATA are right now, with many products co-existing as AGP8X and PCI-E parts, all the while slowly being transitioned totally to PCI-E.

reading is such a challenge sometimes. HE ALREADY HAS THE 5700 ULTRA.

He already has the card. Yeah, I heard that ATI will be offering AGP and PCI-E for each of their upcoming new cards. Thats an AGP and PCI-E card of each flavor (RV380, R420, etc.etc.). Nvidia will be offering "Bridged cards" That will function in either motherboard and like earthwormJim said, will be slowly moving completely away from AGP eventually.

The system your thinking of making Sneaky, is almost below standards for top gaming right now. The AMD 2500+, while no slouch, is already WAAYYY old in terms of performance. Basically you are thinking of building a rig that most gamers would be wanting to get rid of in a few months for something better. I have a 2.8/533 P4 right now, so Im good for a decent while longer, but what is out today puts my 2.8 to shame. Although I am very happy with it.

IMHO

Well, I'm trying to keep this cheap, knowing that I will be making another system when windows longhorn comes out, and possibly buy a pci-e mobo later on, would a 2500+ hold me over? How do those babys overclock?

haha which brings me back to my original question, provided I upgrade the graphics card sometime, would that system last me 2 years w/o making life a royal pain? I'm going to be getting a decent mobo, with SATA, and what have you.

haha I hear ya, but I find it hard to justifty the cost of one of those compared to an Athlon XP, 651 dollars versus lower than 400. I'm so confused! 🙁

Agreed. A 2500+ (which can often oc to 3200+ speeds) isn't that slow currently, but I doubt it'll make 2 years with any amount of comfort.

If you can use PC2100 with an A64 MB, I'd just upgrade your CPU + MB to an A64 3000+ and the cheapest, stable MB.

You can't just buy a faster P4 to slap in your system?

It's just not cost effective, my RAM would be the bottleneck then, Besides, I think I should give AMD a try, you never know if you dont go, or so they say. 😛 And sadly to say, the system i've got now is a Dell, so I can't even OC the processor, thats my main reason for wanting to make my own.

If you wait just just a little bit, the new VIA KT880 chipset will be out by all major vendors.
It's VIA's last hurray for Athlon XP.
It'll sport a dual channel memory controller and native serial ata and better performance.
I'd pair a 2500+ up with one of those boards. 🙂

I was thinking about an ABIT nforce 2 NF7-S, mainly because of the onboard audio's options, and a lot of people told me it's a solid board for $95 bucks, what do you think?

Hey Sneaky,

No offense, but you seem to be uninterested in the advice these fine folks are given ya. Looks like your gonna do what your gonna do.
I thought you were going to upgrade your Dell? We spoke about this and went over what P4 you can go up to. I think we said it could take a 2.8/533 if not mistaken. Would cost you a helluva lot less than 380.00. For 380.00 you can get a 2.8 CPU and some decent PC2700 for your Dell.
The 1.8 Willamette you have in there now just doesnt do it anymore. Besides, the 2.8 P4 will perform better than a 2500+ AMD.

Like I said, your gonna do what you are gonna do. But Good Luck. 🙂

not when you overclock the 2500, not by FAR. and i bet the 2500 can take on a 2.8B in a lot of gaming tests. good luck overclocking that 2.8 in a DELL

Not true, i've changed nearly everything that I had in my original configuration on the advice of forum members, I just DONT wanna piss my money away into the dell that's all, besides, the dell won't even support a 2.8 GHz p4, its OLLLLLD. O yea, the dell doesnt support pc2700 either, that came in the Dimension 4550, ive got a 4500.

Ahhh, I see. You forgot that you had me check on your Dell system. It takes a 2.8. as shown here. But if you plan to o/c, like Nick states, Go with the 2500.

Is the dual hard drive Raid 0 set up a good way to go for this system? Please no comments on prices just the system. Thank you.

With quality ram, you can easily overclock to reach 3200+ speeds. And most gamers are wanting to build a rig like that. That is, the ones that don't want to spend money on an A64.
