A client's husband just passed away, and she wants me to make a slideshow for her to show and play in a loop at the memorial. The thing is, I've never done anything like this before.

She can provide me with the pictures and the music, but it's up to me to arrange them, I guess coordinate it with the music, and to burn it all onto a DVD.

What software am I looking at for doing this, and how difficult will it be? Any tips?

Very easy... windows 7 has this feature built in. or you can try Memories To TV (http://www.codejam.com/).

You just select the photos... but them in the order you want, decide on transition and add background music. Then burn to dvd.

I've used Roxio Easy Media Creator v. 8 to do this. Most software for video editing can do it, too, even though it is not video. It's just added into the feature mix. SOMETIMES, though, the continuous playback / loop function depends on the playback device, not solely on the DVD you burn.

If you know anyone with a Mac, iMovie does an awesome job here, you can drag all the pics in set the music and it will auto fit the slideshow to the length of the song. Has nice Ken Burns effects too.

This. iMovie is decent for simple stuff like this.

This. Or Windows Live Movie Maker will do the same thing.

Powerpoint?

Had this problem at work a few years ago. Wanted to play a Powerpoint show in lobbies, but no way to loop/distribute it without hooking it up to a computer. Turns out there are a lot of programs (all premium) that you can use to record a Powerpoint into a movie, so you can play it off a DVD. Expense it to client?

I did this a month ago for my brother's funeral. Used Windows Media Center to do it, only trick was they don't tell you to use wav files for the music and after several failed burns I googled it and figured it out.

Use In the Arms of an Angel by Sarah McLachlan for maximal tear-jerkerage.
