Just curious:

So I can go ahead and install my OS on an SSD.

Later on, I can make the drive hybrid by merging it with a HD.

HD gets erased of course, but the data on the SSD should still be the same?

To my knowledge, you can't make a cached HDD from a SSD that already has the OS installed on it. If anything, it's the other way around from what you describe. To cache the HDD, you have to carve out a partition from the SSD, which I think requires reformatting the SSD. The data on the HDD stays intact, but the SSD with your OS install gets wiped.

To be clear, by "hybrid SSD" I think what you mean is drive caching aka Intel RST. That's what I described above, and it involves installing the OS on a HDD, then using a new SSD to speed up the HDD's performance. The only other option I know of is Drive Pooling, which is a different story. It just makes multiple drives appear as one big one.
