Making a car fast: What should the first upgrade be?

I'm going to be putting some money into my car just so I can have the satisfaction of keeping up with the normal drivers and maybe racing a bit. I recently installed a K & N Air filter but that's not barly enough yet. Was wondering .... what should my first upgrade be? Or minor upgrade like a air filter....?
If you really need to know- 91' capri.
(yes, i know sh*tty, but I am trying to make it better)

normally you're looking at a ported high compression large valve head with uprated carburetor/fuel injection system coupled with a free flow exhaust.
for the age of the car I would leave well alone just on the expense angle!
 
Well when you're 18 and paying for you own college it's kind of hard to buy a new car....

so any real help would be appreciated 😛

I don't think that's important to a lot of people though...Some sort of attachment to the original car
 
hmm, b0mbr.... well I'll check that out. I do know that there are not many parts for the car... doesn't really need a shift kit or anything seeing as there is not enough power to really push and have to switch fast. As for the 'computer' what do you mean?
 
the only capris worth modifying were the 82-86 capris, when they were basically the same car as the mustang. It's not worth it on the car you have now, you really are better off selling it and getting a faster car if you want to have something to mod.

The computer would be if your car is an automatic. It revs the engine higher before shifting.

Best upgrade you can get: Paint your car yellow and get bright neon green seats (or any other color that clashes with the yellow and is really hard on the eyes). You'll gain 50 horsepower easily. Then go with the Type R sticker and the big Japanese symbol on the back windshield. Forget the engine, after you do that stuff your car will be so fast you will have trouble controling it on the road.

and at 18 paying for your own college, you shouldnt be worrying about suppin' up a caprice.
people will just laugh at you and call you domestic rice
 
Hmm... While we're on the topic. What about a 93 Camry LE 4 cylinder automatic?

I'm not looking to race, but I'd like a little more power going uphill or a little extra. Not going for any engine mods or anything.

Don't do it man... Always drive the speed limit, no racing, no nothing. I know it sounds whatever, but I just got my first ticket for 15 over in a 40 MPH zone. 🙁

LOL! I think there's a video floating around on the internet of a couple of crazy guys doing just that 😀

I think for this car, there's not a lot of hope beyond the usual weenie upgrades like the K&N and a free(er)-flow exhaust. If you had buckets of money that you wanted to put into this car for some reason, you could see if you can find a larger throttle body (and mass-air sensor, if it even uses one), pull the intake and heads and port them, and see if you can find a different cam (or cams). Is the car a turbo? If so, you have more options to work with.. The exhaust will help here, and you can possibly crank up the boost a bit (or replace the turbo).

Still, best bet's a different car.
