I also split the beans lengthwise, probably after soaking and scraped off the tiny dark seeds. They add flavor to the extract and make it stronger. This basic technique (soaking in an alcohol solution, which is what vodka is) is how you make most liqueurs, at least in part. Vanilla extract, basically, is just vanilla liqueur. You can make dozens of other types of liqueurs either from recipes or you can concoct your own. Every liqueur out there was an experiment to begin with. I've made some fine liqueurs, among them coffee, citrus rind and others.
