OMG! I think I'd rather get a 60-80mm adapter before I started hacking up my fans! :Q

That looks easy but most of the noise in my PC comes from the power supply and I dont have the $$$ to go a good one that make little noise.

take it easy, it clearly states that removing the corners is not a required step...simply wanted to reduce foot print.

Thanks for the tip, BobSnob. The fan on my SVC Goldengate heatsink is starting to get a bit noisy. I may try this out for a replacement.

Hmm... Just changed my Delta screamer that came with the GlobalWin WBK38 with an 80mm fan by bending those stoopid clips. So far so good. Didn't think of placing a 60mm holder to put it in place :D

Nice, but I have found it more efficient to just mount an 80mm chrome grill onto the 60mm heatsink and then mount the fan to the grill.

So basically you skip the chopping of fans.

I'm sorry guys, but he's 100% right~!
The large fan motor on 80mm fans often reduces cooling effectiveness, rather than increasing over a 60mm.

GizZo (he's the man when it comes to fans & heatsinks) told me that instead of an 80mm fan mod - a better mod is to use 2 60mm fans. I have a Thermalright CB-6L modded to use (2) 60mm AddA super quiet fans. I get over 30cfm for under 20dBa. You can't beat that with any adapter & 80mm fan. On top of which, the design of the mod directs most of the cool air directly onto the center of the heatsink - right where the core is.

joinT, I'm assuming you are stacking the fans? If so, don't they need to be rotating in opposite directions to get the added force? What fans are you using?

I'm running a 1.4ghz tbird at 1.53ghz 1.75v with an SK-6/AS II/sunon fan (not sure of the specs on the sunon other than it's 4000rpm) and my temps are 54C at idle and 58-60C under load (28C case temp). This seems high to me even with the wimpy fan. I would really like to get that temp down but don't want to go the Delta route.

Seems like you're loosing alot of airflow with that 80mm fan hub in the center of the heatsink. You'd get better results if you offset the fan to get the biggest part of the blade into the middle of the hs.
Although alright this doesn't really deserve two posts.

A friend of mine added an 80 mm fan to his sk6 using an extremely cheap and simple method. He went to the grocery store, bought a couple loaves of bread, and then used the twist ties to mount the 80mm fan on the sk6. Strangely, it works pretty well for him. Personally, I prefer the look of my volcano 7, but it works for him.

Yep and the grill way is less restrictive to boot..

<< You will notice that the fan is missing a couple of blades. These ended up embedded in my fingers during the testing phase. >>

Do you have to do something special to mount an 80mm grill to a 60mm heatsink? I wanna get rid of the 7200rpm fan on my Thermaltake Volcano 6cu+, its WAY too loud.

Hey RedWolf, your friend is a genius. He bought two loaves of bread for twist ties. Why didn't I think of that? I was considering two small appliances for those that retain the cords. Someone should really sell them seperately. They are just so hard to come by. I dream of a day they are so ubiquitous that people pass them in the grocers without giving them a thought and indeed they are so worthless that families aquire drawers full of them in subconcious rememberance of bygone days when they were jealously prized.

I have tons of twisty things around the house, I usually throw them away... You get a bunch of them when ever you have a box of trash bags unless it's the plastic ones. Or just go to the grocery store and snatch some in the fruit/veggy section.

The way I mounted a golden orb upside down on a Geforce DDR is by using 4 zip ties all connected to form a square. The zip ties and adhesion of thermal paste is what holds it on. I took the loud fan off the golden orb because I modded a 120mm fan in the case and added a rotary rheostat to control RPM.

Got some explanations, pictures, anything on how to do that?

I mounted an 80mm fan grill on my 60mm alpha HS using Artic Silver thermal adhesive. Small blobs at the corners of HS and in the middle-just line it up right and make sure grill is upside down. Worked like a charm! Connect 80mm fan (from the bottom) to the oversize grill and mount your HSF. Dropped temp of my Tbird 1.4/KT7A from 49 degrees(using a 34 CFM 60mm) to 44 degrees(with a Sunon KD1208PTS1-6 80mm ?CFM). The delta screamer was 2 degrees cooler (but I was 10 degrees crazier from the noise!)
