That's my problem - I think the hdd is accessed way too often when I work in windows. Any way to reduce this?
I use win98se, 900Mhz Duron PC, 128MB PC133 Ram. Swap file set to permanent at 300MB.
Any good to edit the mincache & maxcache setting? Please post some links that explains the thing.

Is 256MB really needed in win98??
In my win2k I run 512MB but I really see improvement over 256.

I meant that I feel like the hdd is accessed too often even for that amount of memory.

Web surfing, text editing, no reason for the hdd to be accesed when typing in word.
btw when playing games, no problems, all smooth.

do this:

Improve Swap File Performance (Windows 98) Popular
Category: Files > SYSTEM.INI
On systems with large amounts of memory (i.e. > 128mb) the hard disk based swap file is not needed as much, this tweak optimizes the use of the swap file on such systems.

Using notepad open the file SYSTEM.INI in your Windows directory.

Find the [386Enh] section and add a new line reading "ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1". Save the file and restart Windows for the change to take effect.

Settings
Value Name: ConservativeSwapfileUsage
Value Data: 1
