Current job = some programming reports (in SAP), some helpdesk, some general SAP updating, loading parts/prices, a specific CRM software based in FoxPRO that I am soley responsible for. 8am-5pm hours typically.

New opening = In charge of 13 NT boxes, internal website, multiple applications, server backup/maintenance/rebuild. Also directly responsible for approx. 250 in house and 300 field/laptop users desktop/laptop support, plus purchasing of the supplies and hardware as needed. normally 8-5ish but many times staying late or checking in at night to ensure things are smooth.

I'd go with the new job as I don't exactly like programming even though I'm a CS major.

same job location/company - so most benefits/perks wouldn't be any different

PAY --- haven't heard anything for sure, there was mention of "if it worked out there would be a raise in 6 months" but I haven't gotten anything for sure yet.

responsibility/stress would be higher on second job.

no programming on second job, which I might miss (although i do NOT like programming 8+ hours a day every day).

This not a real choice. Hardware support is a thankless job with limited growth potential.

Stick w/ SAP and learn ABAP.

the second job sounds like something i'd want to do. the first job, eh, not so much.

pay is an important factor, though. they should give you a raise up front if you're going to take a job that incurs more stress and requires more overtime. look into it.

 

That's not much of a career move. You're still an IT tech bitch.
Seems to be just a parallel move in the same company, with different responsibilities.

What's gonig to happen if you take the job is that you will now be responsible for ALL of the work while they "find someone" to replace you in your other responsibilities.

Without more money, what is the point?

I know ABAP, it's what I program in now. If it was all about money, the 2nd job would probably be a little higher initially....but long term, the programmer/SAP guy has the potential to make FAR more money.


P.S. --- would it persuade you guys one way if I told you I'd be posting less if I took the 2nd job???

Outsourcing is going to hit the HW guys hard. Its already a fact of life in SW development.

Your next step from programming is Systems Analyst/Business Analyst/Project manager.

Go back to school get your MBA. Eventually your job is going to get outsourced too!

How will it be possible to outsource hardware occupations? I want a job which will be computer hardware related and dont want it to be outsourced! Im thinking of a computer technician.
