Make sure you contact the utility companies before you dig in your yard

I work for a utility company and one of the guys I work with sent these pictures of some guy that blew up himself, his house and his whole family while putting up a fence in his backyard when he drilled into a high powered gas line with a powered post hole digger.

This is where he was standing when he was incinerated.

The campus here lost power for a few hours when some heavy equipment hit an underground powerline. There was a nice loud boom from outside, and the lights went out.

The best part: The powerline wasn't listed in the power company's records, so they had given the OK to dig there.

So wait - was it a pipe failure or a human making the pipe fail?

I think it was a pipe failure. The spot is on the other side of the road, it doesn't make any sense for him to put in a fence there. Also that pipe is rather deep under the ground. Looking at the first picture it's at least 6 feet but maybe even deeper.

I think the OP on the other forum fabricated the story.

Yeah, if you google around some it was indeed a failure. Nobody died thankfully.

But the call before you dig is still very true and important.
