What I've noticed with a lot of the rebate offers from shadier companies is that they don't pay up until you call them on it. I guess their line of thought is that if a customer doesn't inquire, he/she's forgotten about it or doesn't care enough to follow up on it. If a customer does inquire, then it's usually better to actually pay them the rebate because they might raise hell otherwise.

I remember the good 'ol days when discounts were given at time of purchase. Now many products are sold with purposely inflated prices thanks to mail-in rebates. It's their way of getting customer information to sell to marketers, and to make money through all the rebates that aren't sent in or aren't paid off.

Companies that repackage goods (HiVal, IO Magic, Digital Research, etc.) are notoriously bad with rebate fulfillment. Everyone remember Newcom? That company didn't pay any rebates and then went under.

<< What is the best way to find stuff at OM that has rebates? Can't seem to search on it (well...get tons of results). >>

This might not help you with what you're looking for, but when I was shopping at the OM B&M over the weekend, they threw a book of rebate forms in my bag. I had bought something with a tiny rebate (didn't even know...oops), so I guess they throw this book at you instead of the way efficient BB method of printing the rebate form out with your receipt.

Messing with OfficeMax MIR is like playing with fire! Still remember the Prime Peripheral rebates???? I think that's all I have to say.

I agree, i'd say they're even worse than CompUSA (at least CompUSA's phone numbers aren't disconnected right after a promo).

I did end up buying a ton of stuff however (I had a $120 store credit card I wanted to cash out), and hopefully i'll get them. I still haven't gotten my Caller-ID rebate from last october or november...

Got in on this one...but, the $15 off $75 wouldn't take on the online form, so had to order it by telephone :( (The coupon code was valid, but it didn't take the $15 off.)

Still, a pretty good deal, as long as the rebates come in. :)

Where the heck is the page for the Caller ID/phone? I need to get the rebate form and I can't find the page!

I got the webcam/software, caller ID and the $50 fabric chair - will come out to $30 total (I needed a new chair somethin' fierce) ;)

The reason this whole rebate problem has been getting worse is because so few people actually complain in a way that will do any good. If you get screwed, just take 5 minutes and go to the Federal Trade Commission's website at www.ftc.gov and fill out the online complaint form. There is a link to it right on their home page. These are the guys with the power to do something - remember a couple of years ago hearing about all these dot coms who got slapped with half million dollar fines for promising Christmas deliveries when they knew they probably wouldn't make it? That was the FTC. They have a fairly broad authority to deal with anything commerce and trade related. Also, if you ever find yourself getting screwed by one of the phone companies, do the same thing and file an online complaint with the FCC. I remember all these people, including me, getting the runaround by MCI for their $200 Amazon GC switchover promotion. I got nothing after multiple calls and promises. Filed the complaint and then got my GC pronto. They are required by law to resolve these complaints within 30 days or be subject to government sanctions. And if a company gets enough complaints, that's what triggers the investigations which lead to the huge fines. So, just take 5 minutes to file the online complaint!

<< This deal should work in stores...It is Office Max B&M policy to accept the OM.com coupons. >>

I've tried. I couldn't get them to take the $25 off $100 OM.com coupon at all. I tried at all three OM B&Ms in my area.
