I am really curious where Nick works. When I look at govt jobs in my sector they honestly pay well above the avg for the private sector. I have friends who have worked up and down the chain in govt jobs and I have never heard of an 8 dollar an hour govt job. I cant even imagine what they are doing.

I work for a county government in the chicagoland area.

That $8.00 is for a dietary aid union position. I'm looking at it right now on my county's website. Just 1 example of an overpaid union government employee...

I'm also looking at a CNA position, thats also in a union. $11.22/hr

I know our maintenance guys start at $15/hr as well.

I'm not saying there arnt some high paying government union positions, but what I am saying is the vast majority are not. Hacp is spreading FUD.

Dude!! You are posting entry level jobs!!!!!

A dietary aid has about the same job responsibilities as a kid flipping burgers at burger joint, of course it is a low paying job!!!

Between Democrats wanting to keep flooding America with third world people to drive down the overall standard of living in this country so that we all become cheap peasant labor, think China. And Republicans wanting to get rid of all worker protections and access to capital their glorious vision of about 98% of the world as peasants slaving for the elite ruling class is not far off. Now with supreme court saying even foreign companies can buy our elections out of their general treasury we have a just a few years left, enjoy it while you can.

I worked for the federal government for 2 years here. It's a 15-story building with about 2,000 employees. I only made $13.50 an hour, but I was just a part-time college student. MOST of the employees there were GS-11 or GS-12 and they made at least $50,000 per year - some of them as high as $90,000. The pay scale was WAY out of whack.

I couldn't believe how many lazy, unskilled, overpaid employees there were working there. Everyone acts like they have a purpose, but realistically, only very few of them actually make a difference. I shit you not, it's JUST like the scene in Office Space where the Bob's are "interviewing" everyone and asking them what they do there. If that actually happened where I worked, they would probably eliminate 2/3 of the positions there.

I received $500 and $250 bonuses for doing jack shit - which I guess was more than most people did there. All I ever did was my Cisco labs and worked on getting my MCSE.

I'm not anti-union, but what I experienced there was ridiculous.

I'm aware. These are the job postings at the moment on our website. What I am saying, is that the majority of jobs, at least in the chicagoland county government level, are NOT high paying jobs. There are actually 3 jobs total for my whole county government that pay over 100k a year. The Sheriff, the county administrator, and the assistant county administrator.

Yes, there are some government union jobs that are retarded, I agree with you. My point is the vast majority of government union jobs dont make jack shit, and Hacp's numbers are very inflated with these jobs.

Hence, he's foaming at the mouth over nothing really.

They aren't my numbers. They are numbers provided by the New York Times, a liberal newspaper. If anything, they would try to fudge the numbers to make union work look cheaper.

I dont care whose numbers they are. My point still stands.

And for the record, my department at the government facility I work at is NOT union (in case you think I'm biased or something)

The lowwer paying jobs are union. The higher paying ones are MGT/upper level ones.

I am not allowed to be in the union as I am considered part of MGT.

No, your point does not stand.

The only real point you can make is that entry level jobs being offered today are not high paying. That does not mean that all union government jobs are not high paying.

The lack of high paying jobs is most likely the result of two things:
1. A hiring freeze on high paying jobs due to the economy and loss of tax revenue
or
2. The high paying jobs are not listed on that site and are instead listed elsewhere or filled internally.

I worked for the Fed Govt twenty some years ago, and when I started I made about $10 per hour. I quit after about five years because of the lousy pay and terrible working conditions. The only union jobs that are left are police and fire, and those are not left-wing type of unions. These are right-wing thugs that intimidate city and counties by showing up in uniform with their guns to council meetings.
Funny how all of the unions have been broken -with exception of police and fire. Who is it who constantly panders to police and fire? Republicans.

More BS from an ideologue.

They don't have 'unlimited funds'. The government usually very low budget compared to private.

I does essentially have unlimited funds, because when the government spends more then they have in the budget, they just run a deficit, or they jack up fees and taxes. They are rarely if ever forced to reduce spending. Clearly, unions have found their comfy home in the one sector where good service, competitive pay and flexibility are not important: government.

Idiot...

Approx. 85% of California State employees are unionized.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB100...82296077118.html?mod=rss_Today's_Most_Popular

The California State Employees Association claims to represent 140,000+ retired and active employees of the state, I doubt Cali has that many cops :)

SEIU represents 95,000 state employees, or about half of ALL state employees.

BTW the figure above are for state employees and would not include teachers, cops or fire fighters since the vast majority of them would be local employees.

Attention idiot...
Most of those SEIU jobs are crappy low paid positions, with minimal retirement benefits.
The high-paying union jobs are mostly police, fire and prison guards. Teachers pay and benefits are far less than those of cops and prison guards. Which is the real problem?

When I worked for the fed govt the union I belonged to was powerless, didn't even have a right to strike. My pay as a white collar worker was less than that of blue collar workers.
When I went to work for the govt Reagan hatched his privatization scheme, to contract out everything possible to private industry, regardless of cost, and to starve the govt worker so they will quit. I sometimes worked alongside contractors who were getting far more in pay in benefits for doing the same work. Righties wreck the govt and claim "see govt is a failure".

Oh, my point does stand. Provide me with a fuckin shred of evidence that most union government jobs make a lot of money and I'll be more than happy to stick my foot in my mouth.

Until you do that, my point stands. Most government union jobs dont pay much at all.

Disprove it.

We provided the numbers. Non union government workers earn 20% less than union-ed government workers.

Your numbers were generic union vs. non-union, not government union vs. government non-union in similar fields.

Even the Obama administration says Union members generally have higher pay.
Noting that union members generally have higher earnings, Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said in a statement: “As workers across the country have seen their real and nominal wages decline as a result of the recession, these numbers show a need for Congress to pass legislation to level the playing field to enable more American workers to access the benefits of union membership. This report makes clear why the administration supports the Employee Free Choice Act,” a bill that would make it easier to unionize.”

Today, for those low on senority within their unions, pay scales are not as important as keeping your government job when you know that if it was a private sector job, you would have been laid off months ago.
