June 10, 2009 - With the PSPgo now a full-blown reality, folks are beginning to wonder when they'll see the move from just UMD releases to UMDs and downloadable versions of said UMDs. According to Sony Computer Entertainment America Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein, folks won't have to wait long.

"All Sony Computer Entertainment new releases after October 1st will be available on UMD and for download," Rubenstein said.

Of course, Oct. 1, 2009, is the official release date of the PSPgo. Although the digital news only pertains to new first-party releases, it continues to get better. Rubenstein said that "the majority" of the PSP's first- and third-party library will be available for the launch of the PSPgo. In terms of new UMD releases from publishers outside of Sony, it'll be a company-by-company decision on whether to offer a downloadable option, but Rubenstein said that he expects many to support.

Still nothing being on being able to transfer existing UMDs to the PSP Go.

I hope existing psp owners will have the ability to transfer umds to a digital download. I have no desire to get a psp go, but would love to be able to run my games off my memory stick to extend the life of my battery.

You can already do this if you're willing to crack your PSP. Just sayin'.

Sounds just like how the majority of PS2 games would be backwards compatible on the new PS3s via emulation 🙂
