Atheist? No problem. Corporatist theologian with a Plutocratic/Theocratic agenda? BIG problem. Gee, I wonder who that could be.

Seeing as how it is often an indicator of rationality and logical prowess, atheism on the part of a candidate would be seen by me as a point in that candidate's favor.

From your link:

" On the other hand, the survey showed that those who do not believe in God still come in behind every other group polled for, including gays and lesbians (68 percent) and Muslims (58 percent)."

I voted no.

Of course, it would be new and I would definitely support it. But of course, the religious bobbleheads of this country won't let it happen. I'd keep my religion to myself until I was elected.

I don't vote based on religion...(or lack there of) thats just silly.

Yep. If the best candidate is religious or not it doesn't matter to me, and "best" has nothing to do with religion. Ideas and character matter.

Religion doesn't matter to me, unless it's their platform and they're trying to de-secularize.

I value their view of individual liberty and self determination far more.

So yes, of course I'd vote in favor of an Atheist.

I'll vote for any politician that understands that church and state are supposed to be separate in this nation. I don't care if they're Muslim, Christian, atheist, whatever, so long as they will keep it out of government.

I voted no, but now I'm not sure. It would depend on his character, I suppose. If he's like most atheists I've met with the "we're smarter than everyone else" attitude, he'd turn me off quick.

Pretty much this.

As long as said atheist doesn't push their atheism on the rest of the country, it wouldn't bother me. As long as said atheist supports the first amendment, fine.

Trust me, you've met many that aren't like that. They just keep it to themselves. The biggest jackasses are always the loudest people.

What if s/he was able to demonstrate that he was smarter? Would that make him/her more appealing as a candidate?

I suppose that would depend on the demonstration. If he has the attitude that atheists are smarter than all non-atheists by virtue of their atheism, then that's what turns me off.

Humility goes a long way in securing my vote. Arrogance goes equally long in the opposite direction.

What does humility have to do with...anything?

I assume you don't vote then. Or at least you should consider whether participating in politics is really for you.

Politicians are inherently people who have decided they can take responsibility for making decisions for hundreds or millions of people. Arrogance is a pre-req for the job.

While the trend over time is encouraging, it remains the case that an atheist candidate is automatically disqualified by 43% of the voters, making it impossible for any such candidate to win. Atheists are disqualified by more voters than Muslims, and Islam is probably the least popular religion in this country right now.

Here's the poll described in the Huffpo article:

http://www.gallup.com/poll/155285/Atheists-Muslims-Bias-Presidential-Candidates.aspx

You have to wonder what is going on with the electorate when both gays/lesbians and Muslims - 2 groups who face considerable prejudice in our society - fare better than atheists.

Pretty sad, but at the current slow death religion is facing, I'd say about 10-15 years from now an atheist presidential candidate may actually stand a chance.
