Getting more snow than forecasted here in Boston. Got back a little while ago from hiking and have about 4 inches on the ground. Nice having 9 inches of ground clearance and AWD. Somebody in a Mustang was skidding all over the place but thankfully, I was ble to just drive around them.

From a storm article that is being updated:

2:45 p.m.

Gov. Tom Wolf says more than 500 vehicles are stuck in the miles-long backup in western Pennsylvania, but emergency crews have been delivering supplies and officials are working to move people to shelters if needed.

Wolf told reporters Saturday afternoon that each vehicle had been checked at least once, and workers had been delivering food as well as fuel to make sure engines keep running so the heat can stay on.

He says they are working to get shelters in place quickly so people can be moved to them in buses if necessary.

And Wolf said the rest of the commonwealth ‘‘is in as good a state as can be expected.’’ But he warned people to stay off the roads and said another major problem could prompt a closure of highways in the commonwealth.

2:35 p.m.

North Carolina troopers say a sixth person has died in the state as a result of snow and ice that have covered roads in recent days.

The death brings the nationwide total to 12 people killed in a massive snowstorm that has battered the South, mid-Atlantic and East.

State Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Michael Baker said Saturday that a motorist died after losing control of her car and hitting a tree in Hickory. Troopers say 19-year-old Madeline Paige Scalf of High Point was killed in the Friday morning crash.

Remind me again, where did this storm hit?

The roads are almost completely empty in northern Jersey. One asshat with FWD and apparently all seasons sat through an entire light cycle trying to move, but other than that (and plows) not much is going on.

Nice fresh snow with relatively recent plow runs....it's a playground outside. :awe:

some pics from round 2 of shoveling, went out there like 3-4 hours after i had shoveled 24 inches and had about 6 more inches on top of it.

He was probably just trying to get to the nearest mountain. I don't blame him - they're gonna be BEAUTIFUL tomorrow. And also packed to hell.

yeah i shoveled all that myself. i seriously feel bad for people who aren't in shape and have to shovel, they are in for a rude awakening. the reason i wanted to get all this shot done tonight is because tomorrow the sun is supposd to be out and that means snow gonna melt and the snow gonna be heavier. it's already heavy as shit so tomorrow it's gonna be even worse. i still have to shovel my car out which is up the street where it's flat.

i'm in rockville, MD. it's still coming down too.

I'm pretty impressed with Amtrak around here. Metro North shut down, but the Northeast Regional and the Acela are somehow blasting through 2+ feet of snow. Our local service (Shore Line East) is still running, too.

Canada checking in... Just -7 C and no snow today. Buena suerte!

Same here. Been in the -20 range latetly but it warmed up. Actually exactly -7C here too lol.

El Nino screwed us in November/December though. We got lot of rain and wet stuff which was rather messy. Only got one snow fall so far this year. Maybe like a foot or two on the ground at most.

I want lots of snow like that, that's why I bought my snow blower! I want to use it! 😀

It's been a while since we've had a really good dump here, like 2-3 feet overnight. Those are always fun, especially if I'm off or on night shift, since I have more time to clear it. 😛

I had a feeling this was the real deal. We also got to see snow when we left dc last sunday. Good luck to everyone. When i left chicago last monday it was 0 degrees.

when i was shoveling i looked at my roof and was thinking that is a lot of weight on the roof hope it doesn't collapse!

You should be fine, they're built for that kind of weight... or at least they SHOULD be. 😱 I've had 6+ feet on mine at some point. My house is L shaped and snow tends to accumulate quite a bit in the corner of the L part. Had to go up there once to clear it as I had an attic ventilation issue that caused ice dams.

You MIGHT want to think about shoveling (or raking) some of it off. I've seen many roof collapses over the years due to heavy snow accumulation.

There are some pretty nifty "snow rakes" on the market to make the job a bit easier.

Maybe up in the great frozen north country...but not in most places. Roofs are designed to support the weight of the roof PLUS any EXPECTED snow load. (depending on the area)

my top 3 neurosis this day:

weight on deck
weight on roof
blocked sewage/pressure pipe on roof and external HVAC stuff.

But I can't get to any of it right now. ...all we have is a dustpan. 🙁

(western CA didn't have this shit)

How come you don't park at the end (street side) of the driveway?
