A friend of mine wants to have his 20 gig Maxtor Hard drive as the primary Master IDE device and his 32X CDROM as his primary slave drive... i changed all the necessary jumper settings and when the hd is set to master and the cdrom to slave the computer says that the primary slave failed and to hit F1 to continue.. when i do this the computer boots xp normally but its unstable.. i thought it was a defective cdrom drive but we have tried like 3 different drives and all say that they failed.. it is bios settings?.. he's using the ASUS AV7266 mobo with an xp1700+ chip.. thanks

Try another cable. Also make sure the master device is plugged in to the end connector and the slave to the middle connector on the IDE cable.

I would either try a new ide cable or flip em so the cdrom is master. Also I would check the bios to make sure it notices all the drives.

Oh yeah, I once had a DVDROM (Afreey) that would FAIL everytime, turned out for whatever reason it WOULDNT work on 80 pin ide cables, only on 40 pin.
