Major Problems With New PC - Please Help!

I got my new computer 2 days ago and so far it has been up and down. The biggest problem is running games. Quake 3 would play for 2 seconds and freeze, Raven Shielf now will load a mission and the computer will go to a blue screen saying there has been a major problem and windows was shut down to protect the pc. The first time that happened with raven shield, the computer just shut off completely! And then the usb ports didn't work until I shut all the power off and started up again. Odd anyway it seems that anything requiring OpenGL or any games are very unstable. Now Windows Media Player just gives me an internal application error and won't open! Any ideas, coudl this be the RAM ?

XP 2500+
Asus A7N8X Delux
Radeon Sapphire 9100 128DDR ( Catalyst 03.4 drivers installed )
512 Crucial 2700 DDR
Windows XP Home

My monitor is a Viewsonic P775, older monitor. Under my display properties in the monitor tab it lists just 'Default Monitor" and is not recognizing it as a p775. I don't know if that is significant though...

Please Help!

I was just playing Colen Mcree Racing 2.0, actually worked and then BAM. Freeze and comp turns off. Turn back on no mouse or keyboard detected (both usb) Shut all power off and turn back on and its fine. Please Help Me!

Take it back to the store... they have 16 year old kids build those where I live... Who don't know jack about computers, really.

Motherboard Temperature - 32'C / 89'F
CPU Temperature - 67'C/152'F

Not sure what this means I'm such a n00b. Too hot ?

Yeah, that's real hot actually. To compare, I'm running my system with a low speen fan at 7 volts, meaning it's slowed down even more for silence.. and my CPU temp right now is 39C. Your CPU won't blow up or burst into flames at that temp, but temps that high CAN cause instability. Try aiming for under 55C under 100% load for the CPU. Take it back to the store and tell em your PC is overheating and get em to fix it 🙂

Where do you live? 16 year olds are avg. to grown-ups it all depends.

I'd take it back to the store, but whether it's a heat problem or not is debateable. The ram might be the culprit. Another possibility(if you installed the Catalyst drivers) is that the Video drivers(or other drivers) were improperly upgraded/installed.

2 questions though: Did the store completely build and install the system? Or did you install some old parts(specifically a Hard Drive) into a Barebones system?

The store installed everything,

if this is a heat problem do you think that this will cause any permanent damage ?

It could, but if it's the cpu I doubt any permanent damage has occured, the cpu and motherboard have safegaurds which should protect the cpu.

It is possible that the Northbridge or other chip on the Motherboard is overheating, which could explain the odd USB behaviour.

Still very possible they have mucked up some driver install, especially chipset, DirectX, or some other driver.

I hope the store is good about these things, cause it sounds like something they did or didn't do is the culprit. My bro builds systems(Home-based) that sometimes take days to figure out, mainly due to time constraints, but also due to the possibilities being endless until certain things are tried to narrow the problem down.

I have a 9100 on my secondary system, and I advise you not to get the 3.5's. There's a bug with them on 9100's where you can't run OpenGL games. Stick with the 3.4's until they release newer drivers.

The ones I listed above are the 3.4 ones though no ?

Yeah, I'm just saying DON'T upgrade your drivers like hdeck said, at least not until they release an officially fixed version for the 9100.

Ok I'll remember not to, I had the 3.5 on for a bit but changed to the 3.4 later.

I think you'd be nutz not to just take it back and tell the merchant.... "I'd like a computer that works please"

-Sid

(no reason for you to sweat bullets trying to fix a mistake that is obviously from the merchant.)
