First of all, I only have an upgrade version of WinXP Pro. No big deal. I got a copy of Win98 off the tech geeks here at work, formatted the drive, installed Win98, then upgraded it to WinXP Pro, installed some drivers, installed FEAR, messed around a bit with FEAR, all seemed well.
So I go to install Spinter Cell: Chaos Theory. Let the troubles and tribulations begin.
The system froze up on the very beginning of the SC:CT install. Nothing responded, so I had to do a hard shutdown via the power button.
When I rebooted 60 seconds later, I received a BSOD with an "Unmountable Boot Volume" error. I find some directions online that say to get to the Recovery Console (MS-DOS) with the XP disc in the drive. I do so, and commence to run a CHKDSK with the following command: "chkdsk /p" (no quotes), then "fixboot" after the chkdsk is finished, then "exit".
When it reboots, I have still get the same stupid BSOD w/error. So I try a slightly different chkdsk with "chkdsk /r" that supposedly takes longer, but REALLY should boot into Windows.
Still no joy.
So's I says "Screw it. I'll just reformat, reinstall Win98, upgrade to WinXP, and just start from scratch. Yet again."
But ooooooh no, it ain't that easy. I can't even get to the option to reformat. When I try to reinstall Win98, it gets to the screen where I'm supposed to hit "enter" to begin the installation, but it just sits there frozen with the CPU running...for 7 hours straight (I left it running while I went to work).
When I try to reinstall just WinXP, it says that there isn't a previous version of Windows installed and to install a Windows disc (not XP). I do so, and it says that it cannot recognize this disc as a Windows disc.
I'm at a complete loss. I can't format the damn thing just so I can start from scratch. I can't reinstall Win98. I can't get WinXP to repair itself. The system keeps freezing during Win98 reinstall attempt. AHHHHHHGGGGGGG!!!!!
I'm so pissed I can't see straight.
Now for some specs:
What was upgraded:
-Old mobo > new Abit KN8 SLI mobo
-AMDXP 2100+ cpu > AMD64 3700+ cpu
-GeForce 4 5700 LE GPU > GeForce 7800GTOC GPU (single)
-2x256MB PC2100 RAM > 2x1GB PC3200 RAM (RAM was installed AFTER all these problems began)
-Old generic case > new Raidmax Sagitta
What stayed the same:
-Ultra X-Connect 500w PSU
-160GB HDD (IDE)
-80GB HDD (IDE)
-DVD-ROM
-CD-RW
-Floppy
-Absolutely NO 'net connection at any point in the HDD's lifetime.
To clarify, everything was working previous to any upgrades at all. Everything was working last night, right up until I did a hard shutdown.
I clarify because everytime I've ever had a problem and seek help (not just here, but in general), I invariably get all sorts of "definitely a bad memory stick/HDD/CPU/mobo/optical drive/etc." comments, and when a fix is finally found it turns out that NOTHING was bad (except maybe the operator ).
Anyway, your benevolent assistance is highly appreciated. Windows is the only thing that's EVER given me a major hassle on my computer. I hate it so much it's literally making me see red I'm so friggin' pissed.
