MAJOR problem with Epox 8k7a...HELP!

Ok so i got my Epox 8k7a and 1.3 GHz Thunderbird and installed it last night. As soon as i turned it on, a '00' shows up on the LED on the motherboard, the fans spin up, but i get no hard drive activity, no video, and no power or HD light on the front of the case. Basically the ONLY thing that is happening is the fans spin up. I double checked ALL the connections and made sure none were backwards or in the wrong place. The only problem i found was that the power LED from my case (Antex SX) is 3 pins, but on the motherboard it is a 5 pin socket. Anyone have ANY ideas??? Just a DOA board or processor perhaps?

Sounds like a DOA. Check to see if your cpu works in another board and if it does its most likely you got a DOA board.

Unfortunately, i don't have another board to try the processor on.

Do you know what the '00' on the motherboard LED panel means? I can't find it anywhere in the manual.

either that or he busted his core with a heavy
duty heatsink!

Easy to do, puttin one on a Tbird is like

1. If your cpu uses "266" bus, be sure to adjust jumper on the board, it comes set for the 100 speed.

2. Be sure your power supply is correct, is it on AMD approved list?

3. Remove all cards but video, disconnect all drive cables from board, disconnect all power connectors from the drives, disconnect all printer/usb cables, and try to start.

4. Take another gander at the HSF, be sure it is contacting the cpu properly, also be sure the fan is plugged in.

If still dead, RMA my son.

For what it's worth, I've gone through two EPoX 8KTA3+ mobo's in two weeks. The first had exactly the same symptoms as your, TheJackal. It was DOA. The second became increasingly unstable on the 14th day of use, with repeated crashes. It got to the point where I couldn't even boot into the bios. I returned it today and got my money back. For me at least, there won't be a third EPoX 8KTA3+. :disgust:

Not sure if you already tried this or not, but take everything out of the system except for the video card, motherboard, cpu, and ram. Leave all other drives and cards disconnected and try to see if you can get a video post with just the barebones.

If it still doesn't work, did you tamper with your L1 bridges on the CPU? Make sure the mulitplier jumper setting on the motherboard corresponds to your CPU's default multiplier setting. You mentioned you had a 1.3 GHz TBird (not a 1.33 which would be the correct CPU for a 266 DDR bus). If you really have a 1.3 GHz version, make sure the bus setting on the board is 100 MHz (200 DDR), and that the CPU multiplier is set accordingly.

If that still doesn't work, your board is most likely DOA. (Dead on Arrival, not Dead or Alive, that fighting game with the girls with huge ta ta's

as for the pin for PowerLED...that's how it is with SX830 case. Just align the 1st with the marked end. If still doesn't work, reverse it...that's how my SX830 and Epox 8K7A works. But it shouldn't affect booting in any way.

Sounds like a bad motherboard. But i do have to say that i've setup about 15 various epox board varying from the 8kta2,8kta3,8k7a and haven't had a bad board yet.

Thanks for all the info. I do have the 1.33 GHz version with the 266 MHz bus. However, i did not switch the jumper from 100 to 266 on the mobo. That is probably the problem. I will try tonight.

I had the same problem. Removal of each card and connector isolated a faulty Reset switch; it was remaining closed. Disconnection of the Reset switch permitted a boot-up.

For your LED connection, refer to the manual, page 3-12. On J2, use the pins starting with pin 1. Pin 1 is hot - usually a colored wire on your connector.
