I have a server downstairs that distributes internet to four other computers throughout the house...this morning, i was trying to hook up a g4 i borrowed from my grandpa to the internet, so i disconnected the cable from my regular computer, and plugged it into the mac...i messed around with a few settings, and no luck...the internet wouldn't work on the mac, so i switched the cable back...next, i try to go online, and none of the computers go online except for the server...aparently the server had settings messed up to ones i had done on the mac, idk how this happened. I have win server 2k3 enterprise running, and here's the configuration of my network connections: I have an onboard LAN on the mobo, and that's where the internet comes in to from the cable modem...Next, i have an internal router PCI card which I hook up the other four computers to. After that in Network connections I share the onboard LAN internet connection so that the others can use the internet. Both cards have automatic ip and automatic dns. I've tried everything I can think of, but i'm really stuck this time...My dad needs to use the internet for work, and i need it for school stuff...thx

My first guess would be that the router got the MAC address of the network card on the G4 computer. Have you tried removing the power from the back of the broadband modem, waiting about 10 seconds, and plugging it back in (while hooked up to the server)? Hope this helps.

You might want to think about running a server as your 1st connection from your cable modem and before a router/firewall. You are asking for trouble. Why not just by a a $15 router and plug them ALL in after that. Problem (many of them) solved.
They way you have it right now is VERRRY bad, for you and your internet neighbors.

i had a router, and it restricted me from doing stuff...i like server more, but i get ocasional problems like this...i'm definately not trying to hook up the mac again....

What could a properly configured router not allow you to do?
Do you realize how bad it is to run an OS (especially a server OS) directly connected to the 'net ?
