Major Heat Problems with Quad Q6600

I just built my system over a week ago and checked the core temps today. I was not pleased.

At STOCK VALUES my system temps are as follows:

Core 0: 74C
Core 1: 70C
Core 2: 55C
Core 3: 59C

This are idle temps, my friends, and they are WAY too high. I reseated the fan/heatsink, which is the standard one. I am desperate for help on this issue.

Note: On occasion, my computer does not boot correctly and upon reset it says there is a CMOS checksum error. I'm relatively sure these two problems are related, but don't know what that problem is.

I think this is a power supply issue, but if it could be something else, I would appreciate any suggestions before I return and buy another PSU.

My system setup as follows:

Core 2 Duo Quad Q6600
ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus Motherboard
OCZ (2 x 1G) DDR2 PC-800 Platinum Memory
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB Video
Coolermaster Centurion 5 Case
Sparkle B204 400W PSU

Why would it be a power issue. Seems to me your heatsink is not sitting right. What are your ambient temps?

I doubt it's the ambient temperature as the fog in San Francisco keeps it cool here I've tried reseating the heatsink a couple of times, but it doesn't make a difference.

Update your BIOS to the latest?

Going to try to reseat the HSF and update the BIOS. Be back with results.

Some minor success here... Following advice, I tried to make the heatsink as flat and tight as possible. My four cores are now hovering around 50C each.

Now I have the problem the majority of others are having b/c 50C is idle is still too high I believe.

Perhaps it should be tighter? I'll be back.

Sparkle 400 watt PSU for a quad ?? That alone is a problem. Need a good quality 550-700 watt PSU.

That'd hardly make the CPU's temperatures rise.

OP: I suggest you get some quality thermal paste, clean your CPU completely off the thermal paste that came with the HSF and then reseating the heatsink.

Things are looking better folks. The core temps have settled in to about 45-49C idle, which is still above where I'd like it to be, but better than 55-75C I was getting before.

I am going to get some thermal paste and then reseat the heatsink again and also have decided to get another PSU (Corsair 520HX). I'm confident these steps will solve the problems.

PSU doesn't increase temps FYI.

Anyway with the stock HSF those temps are about average.

Yes, not using any TIM is sure to give you crap temps and vary greatly with each mount.

I like how your first temps were 70C on one side and high 50s on the other. Tilted HSF much? lol!
