Major clergy in church today.

Past Lifer 1957-2014 In Memoriam
Lots! There was our cardinal, one new bishop (whose diocese is in Montreal but who is originally from Ottawa), 6 priests (including the one who baptised the bishop as a baby), some deacons, etc... Plus the mass was bilingual instead of just in French, so much of it was repeated in both French & English. As a result, it lasted over an hour instead of the normal 45 minutes. Tons of incense too.

The basilica where I go now that our parish church has closed recently is VERY ornate, so much that the opulence and intricate ornamentation was distracting the first couple of weeks, more than distracting, intimidating even. Makes one feel very small, insignificant at first. The building dates from the mid 1800s and, while the outside is quite sober in appearance, it looks like they decided not to leave more than a few inches inside not covered with gold, some bright colour or intricate design. For example, the choir is surrounded by life-size statues of the apostles and other biblical figures.

Here are some pictures for you to see what I mean.

Thanks. 🙂

Here is the church I went to until last month when it closed. The video shows the roof collapse. They repaired the church but the final bill was too much for the weekly collection to cover, so the diocese decided to close the church. The church is declared a historical building so it won't be demolished. Not sure what will happen to it.

One thing Catholics have over Christians is that they sure build some beautiful places to bible bang in. I remember when I used to be Catholic, my friend took me to his Christian "church." It was held in a high school gym...lawl.

Why the big party? A 1.5 hour mass would be torturous. It was all I could do to sit through an hour when I was growing up :^D

Imagine if all of that time and money had been spend on something productive rather than building giant monuments to fictional beings?

Imagine if everyone let everyone else live as they choose and instead focused on improving themselves and being the best and most productive they can be rather than ranting on internet forums about the religious anytime an opportunity arises. 🙄

And I don't have a religious bone in my body.

How am I not "let[ting] everyone else live as they choose"? What exactly am I doing to prevent this?

It's what assholes do.

You're spewing venom over someone else's views. You do this because you think you're better than that person.

Building huge monuments is not a bad thing.. but crediting GOD with everything a human does is.

In a sense I agree with GA.

Seems I miscalculated. The mass lasted a bit over an hour, not an hour and a half. It starts at 15 minutes after the hour and that threw me off.

Same here, but I am Russian Orthodox. Basically same architecture.
I got invited to mormon and protestant churches, and I loled at valuelessness of buildings.
