Major breakdown! I understand nothing and cry for help!

Thanks for peeping in, really need some solution on this one!

I have built a computer for my wifes brother and it just wont work.
Components:
Abit K7A-raid
Gainward Gforce2pro
Live value
IBM 30GB hard drive (suspected culprit)
WinXPhome
and not much more

It behaves totally irregular. Sometimes it starts fine, sometimes it hangs. I have
tried a clean install w formatted C: and it messes up. Either BSOD saying
DRIVER_IRQL_BAD_OR_MISSING and some text, or
Missing, damaged \windows\system32\config\system, urging me to use the Repairconsole of the Installdisk.

What is going on with it? I know these IBM drives are messy, could it be it?
VERY grateful for help/answers/comfort

If you suspect the hard drive, go to IBM's website and see if they have some sort of diagnostic utility to check the drives integrity. I did that with my Maxtor recently and found out it was on the verge of death. A quick RMA and I am already back in business. Just a suggestion.

hovenas, I did a Google search on both the error messages you're seeing. Re the Missing, damaged thing, check out this Google search. FWIW I got nothing via Google on the DRIVER_IRQL_BAD_OR_MISSING item. Nevertheless check out the other search. There sure look like items that address your error message.

Also, I'll echo d8212's suggestion to get IBM's Drive Fitness Test utility and check out your drive. Do you know what IBM model that drive is? There were too many issues w/ the 75GXP series to struggle w/ that drive for very long. I'm not an AMD user. Is 1540MHz the normal clock for a 1700XP? If not, I'd suggest you debug this system w/ that Athlon at stock clock.

EDIT: Here's an MS link that addresses the Missing. damaged error message you're receiving (pulled from the above Google search).

Thx guys...
Jeff, its not my rig, it is a rig I built. Ive been building quite a number of rigs now, but this one messes up my rep!!!
I appreciate you guys responding so quick.

Check also KA-7 FAQ for detailed information about KA7 motherboards.
I guess your mb was made after July 2000 since it boots.

My KA7 would do exactly as described in the faq when I put my radeon 9700 on it 🙁

The motherboard has been doing sterling since I got it, it is just that I RMA ed the IBM drive and the nw one I got as replacement doesnt quite do it... Havent been susptecting it but I begin to wonder now...

The boot problem was the only problem that I had. And it did boot if i would press the reset key
just after powering on. It really should cause any other problems.

Another thing that can cause very strange behaviour is bad memory.
Have you checked it with memtest or some other memory tester?

I will second this question. Memtest86 won't find all memory errors, but it will catch most of the common ones. I have had many computers with similar symptoms that were caused by bad memory.

hovenas, what case/power supply are you using? I agree w/ the other replies that a memory test is in order, but depending on your p.s. I'd put that on the suspect list too. The reset issue you mention makes the p.s. suspect.

If sometimes the system feels sluggish (ie not responding instantly) and if you get random slowdowns for no reason then it mght be your IBM drive.

Thx guys. the ps is 300w Q-systems or something like that. It is supposed to be really good. Havent had a chance to test yet, will asap and I will post all results!
You are awesome ppl, much appreciated

I want to thank you for all the help, it turned out the HD was a bad one, got a seagate Barracuda IV in instead. Works flawlessly (prayerfully) now.
One being helped guys and gals, have a great one!

Last year my system started exhibiting a similar list of symptons. To make a long story short, I replaced the RAM, powersupply, etc, it turned out the hard drive was failing.

It does sound like a mobo issue to me... It was the error message that led me to believe this. It is not a message that a hard drive would give. It sounds logic related. I would put your processor, hard drive, and vid card in a similar mobo if possible 🙂
